The application is described of magnetostatic wave delay lines to group-delay equalisation at intermediate frequencies of millimetric circular-waveguide lengths utilised in high-data-rate digital communication systems. Experimental results and theory have shown that suitable bias-field-adjustable-delay/frequency characteristics can be realised using surface-wave propagation in thick yttrium-iron garnet (y.i.g.) films grown by liquid-phase epitaxy.

The complex natural frequencies for the thin-wire antenna or scatterer are computed from Hallén's integral equation and are compared with those obtained from Pocklington's equation. The good agreement between the two methods shows that the concepts of the singularity-expansion method are independent of the type of integral equation employed in the formulation of the antenna or scattering problem.

The effect of ambient temperature on the gain and centre frequency of transferred-electron reflection amplifiers is reported for devices with n+ or metal-alloy cathode contacts. The dependence of the centre frequency on temperature was much stronger than predicted theoretically, and, contrary to expectation, similar performance was obtained from both types of diode.

The anomalously-low critical field, previously reported in phase change devices that used 4-n-pentyl-4-cyanobipheny (PCB), is shown to be a result of the unusual behaviour of the cholesteric additive used. Using different additives removes the anomaly. The results allow a determination of the twist elastic constant of PCB.

A new method for the nodal analysis of networks containing infinite-gain differential operational amplifiers is described. From this description an equivalent network containing only 2-terminal elements and voltage-to-current transducers is derived.

The phase (sign) of the bias tuning of a transferred-electron device is found to be affected by the circuit load. A high-nl device tends to show positive tuning and a low-nl device tends to show negative tuning. The frequency of operation also affects the voltage at which the device starts to change its tuning phase from positive to negative.

Es wird eine neue, sehr einfache Schaltung zur komplexen Vorverzerrung hochfrequenter Signals beschrieben. Sie besteht aus einer HF-Brücke mit Laufzeitausgleich und einem nichtlinearen Glied. Die Wirkungsweise beruht darauf, daβ Nulzsignal und nichtlineare Verzerrungsanteile in Gegenphase gebracht werden. Damit können nachgeschaltete Verstärker, Frequenzumsetzer usw. linearisiert werden. Die Verzerrungen werden im Prinzip vollständig kompensiert. Dies gilt für einen groβen Aussteuerbereich.A new very simple circuit for complex predistortion of r.f. signals is described. It uses an r.f. bridge with equal electrical lengths and a nonlinear component. The principle of operation is that the signal and the nonlinearities are put into opposite phase. This allows one to linearise the following stages as amplifiers, upconvertors etc. Theoretically, the distortions can be cancelled completely. This principle operates over an extended dynamic range.

A time-division multiple-access synchronisation scheme is described that uses a minimal bandwidth of a satellite global beam transponder with most traffic being transmitted through a spot beam transponder. Such a scheme is ideally suited to the next generation of communication satellites in which extensive use is likely to be made of spot beam antennas to achieve ‘frequency reuse’.

Focal-region-field techniques can be used to determine the crosspolarisation performance of a front-fed paraboloidal antenna. Expressions are derived for the conditions that the aperture fields of a feed must satisfy to give low crosspolarisation. This extends the concept of a Huygens source to finite-aperture feeds.

Calculations are presented to show that surface waves can be launched into a substrate from an open-ended stripline termination; the launching efficiency depends on the substrate and stripline geometry, and theoretical estimates agree well with the measured data. The effect of these waves in stripline circuits, antennas and resonators is discussed, and a recommendation is made that involves using a trough termination to reduce the surface-wave launching efficiency.

The feasibility of a high-pulsed-power I band source using both n-type and p-type TRAPATT diodes has been demonstrated. Deep-diffused n-type diodes have generated more than 100 W in the I band.

A new technique is described that enables asynchronous flow tables to be assigned a single transition time racefree code using a table-lookup technique based on an n-dimensional lattice. The method is suitable for both manual and machine computation, and can also be used iteratively for the generation of economical assignments.
