A sufficient condition for the location of the three poles and three zeros of a rational function is proved for the corresponding bicubic impedance to be of the minimum-resistive type and RLC-ladder-realisable in a few easy steps without any augmentation.

A current-controlled negative-resistance effect has been observed in sintered polycrystalline yttrium-iron-garnet (y.i.g.) ceramics. There are some differences between the switching behaviour of these materials and the switching behaviour of single-crystal y.i.g., which has been described previously by other workers.

An algorithm for the transient analysis of nonlinear networks is described. It uses a nodal-admittance representation and an implicit integration technique. The algorithm allows a compact and fast computer implementation, ideally suited to small-computer environments. An example of results obtained with an ALGOL implementation is given.

It is shown that, because a mixer diode is assumed passive, constraints exist which limit the possible magnitudes of the various Fourier coefficients in the expansion of the time-varying resistance or conductance chosen to represent the diode.
Acoustic-surface-wave propagation on gallium arsenide

Measurements of surface-wave parameters on the {100} plane of gallium arsenide are presented. Measurements around the 100 MHz region reveal three types of wave, whose velocities are compared with theoretical predictions. Some estimates of the coupling coefficient and beam steering are also made.
Reflecting trackchanger: new acoustic-surface-wave component for folding long delay lines onto small substrates

A new acoustic-surface-wave component is described, which has the unique property of reflecting a freely propagating acoustic wave onto a path adjacent to the input path. This ‘trackchanging’ operation may be performed several times to fold a long acoustic-delay path onto a short substrate. The trackchanger has a loss below 3 dB over a 50% band-width, and is particularly suited to materials of large electro-mechanical-coupling constant. No external electrical components are required, and the device is constructed by standard photolithographic techniques.

The use of D type flip-flops with a generalised arithmetic array increases its generality, speeds up processes involving divisions and enables the array to be used more efficiently. The calculation of ab/c is used as an example, but it is with large calculations involving a succession of such operations that the array is most useful.

InP transferred-electron microwave oscillators have been made which have high efficiency in the 12–18 GHz band. The maximum observed efficiency is 13.2% at 15.3 GHz, which is superior to published results in IMPATT and GaAs transferred-electron oscillator devices. A peculiar cathode contact is necessary in order to obtain high microwave performance.

Metal-nitride-oxide-silicon capacitor arrays can be used to store information which is presented to the input as an electrical or optical pattern. The stored information can be read sequentially and nondestructively. Such arrays offer the possibility of high-density memories which are simple in structure and mode of operation.

An analysis is made of the linear-regulator problem with control constrained to be a linear combination of known functions over a given time interval. It is shown that, under these circumstances, the continuous linear-regulator problem can be converted to a discrete linear-regulator problem. As an example of the procedure, a controller is designed for a 3rd-order plant, and the control is constrained to be linear over two equal control periods.

Plant sequence controllers which employ integrated-circuit memory devices are often prone to malfunctioning in the presence of electrical noise. To avoid this problem, a technique is proposed whereby only the combinational-logic parts of the controller are realised in integrated-circuit form, the memory function of the system being provided by the mechanical actustors.

It is shown that, if the graph G of a network N is the sum of n Hamiltonian circuits, the product G×G of G with itself is the sum of 2n Hamiltonian circuits. For example, C×C, where C is a circuit, is the sum of two Hamiltonian circuits, and K2n+1×K2n+1, where K2n+1 is the complete graph of order 2n+1, is the sum of 2n such circuits.
