The transient switching behaviour of an m.n.o.s. memory transistor with thin oxide layers (̃25 Å) is studied. The theory takes into account the initial stored charge, the finite nitride current and the voltage dependence of tunnelling probabilities through oxide and nitride. An explicit solution is obtained, which is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

An exact method is given for the temperature determination of devices in circuits analysed by nonlinear-circuit-analysis programs. The method is based on the simultaneous solution of the electronic and thermal network equations by introducing the ‘thermal-node’ temperatures as well as the node voltages. These voltages and temperatures are arranged in a joint state vector.

A new small unidirectional wire antenna, useful for an indoor television receiving antenna, has been developed for use in the v.h.f. band. This antenna consists of two closely spaced dipoles. This letter describes the principle involved and introduces the equations for input impedance and gain. Experimental results show fairly close agreement with the theory.

An extension of the pseudodiagonalisation technique leads to a minimisation of the off-diagonal terms of the inverse Nyquist array in a way which reflects dominance over an entire frequency range. This new formulation also permits the design of certain types of dynamic compensation for multivariable control systems.

The most important characteristics of a waveguide feed with four λ/4 chokes offset from the waveguide aperture are discussed. This feed is useful for illumination of deep paraboloidal reflectors (F/D < 0.35) and shows very good E-H plane equality and broad pattern bandwidth.

The small-signal impedance and noise figure of a Gunn diode with a homogeneous field profile have been calculated, including diffusion. The importance of the nL product, d.c. electric field and cathode boundary condition are examined. Comparison is made with reported measurements at high nL products.

The two halves of a split transducer are arranged so that bulk-wave spurious transmission is cancelled. The surface-wave radiations from the two halves are made to reinforce each other by means of a phase shifter which affects only the surface wave.

A 1010 bit, biphase-coded, surface-wave matched filter on s.t.-cut quartz is described, and waveforms are shown. The matched filter was designed to operate with a 60 MHz carrier and 10 Mbit/s code rate (0.1 μs tap spacing). Measurements indicate that the predicted performance is achievable by application of straightforward design procedures and fabrication techniques.

The lightning-flash counter recommended by CIGRÉ (international conference on large electric systems) employs a horizontal aerial suspended between two masts approximately 35 m apart. In an effort to reduce the cost of installation and ground space required, a vertical-aerial lightning-flash counter has been designed which has approximately the same operating characteristics as the horizontal-aerial flash counter. The circuit is a modified and improved version of that used in the transistorised CIGRÉ lightning-flash counter. Some preliminary field tests are reported.

The authors calculate the characteristics of m.o.s.t.s, taking full account of the surface electric-field dependence of mobility in the channel, which is very significant for thin-oxide or high-gate-voltage devices. An approximation is used for the average effect of background ionised impurity charge. Fields along the channel are assumed to have a negligible influence on mobility.

Methods of preparing microwave encapsulations for gallium-arsenide diodes, using a glass-ceramic-copper combination, have been developed. These encapsulations are not only cheaper than alumina- or beryllia-based ones, but the glass ceramic used has the additional advantage of more favourable microwave properties and permits a considerably greater flexibility of design of components and encapsulations than was previously available. Selected patterns can be produced in the dielectric, over large or small areas, to the tolerances compatible with integrated-circuit technologies. This opens up new possibilities and many applications over a wide range of frequencies.

In this letter, the transfer efficiency of the CCITT V.41 error-protection method is determined, pointing out that it is better at a high error rate and long transmisson block than had previously been estimated.

The transfer function of acoustic-surface-wave (a.s.w.) bandpass filters exhibits ripples in the passband and sidelobes in the stopband, owing to the finite length of the sin x/x-shaped interdigital transducer used for the filter's impulse-response synthesis. A direct means of overcoming this inconvenience by weighting the interdigital transducer according to smoothing functions, such as those of Fejèr and Lanczos, which were developed for the suppression of ripples due to the Gibbs phenomenon, has been devised. The reported results show the effectiveness of this simple approach to the improvement of a.s.w.-filter capabilities.

A simple microwave method for measuring the surface conductivity and permittivity of thin layers, such as epitaxial semiconductors on semi-insulating substrates, is proposed, and is shown to be of high accuracy at X band frequencies.

This letter describes a technique for the synthesis of lowpass sharp-cutoff filters employing a nonlinear element. The nonlinearity is preselected, and the linear portion of the filter is synthetised around it. Such a procedure yields a very simple technique for synthetising the above class of nonlinear filters.

The use of an IMPATT reflection amplifier to produce phase modulation at microwave frequencies has been demonstrated. By operating the IMPATT diode near to avalanche resonance frequency, phase-switching through 180° can be obtained, and the drive current can be set to give equal gain in the two phase states so that no amplitude modulation is produced. Possible application to high-frequency data-transmission systems is envisaged.
