Measurements of sky-noise temperature at elevations of 5° and 20° and at frequencies of 11.75 and 17 GHz, supplementing those of an earlier series, have been used to derive cumulative distributions of slant-path attenuation. A relationship between the distributions is suggested.

A method is presented for solving the problem of fitting decay-type experimental data by sums of exponentials. Both the exponents and the coefficients of the exponentials are considered as unknowns. The novel idea presented here is to consider the sum of exponentials as a solution of an integral equation. A step-by-step procedure is given for the solution of the problem in the least-squares sense. An advantage of the proposed method is that the data need not be equidistant.

A method for evaluating the coupling between two rectangular waveguides, coupled by a slot of arbitrary dimensions in a wall of arbitrary thickness is described. The method is based on the solution, by numerical techniques, of a pair of coupled integral equations. Results for typical shunt and series slots are presented.

A high Q, insensitive, active RC network, usable up to several megacycles, is described. It has similar properties to the circuit proposed by Tarmy and Ghausi, but uses operational amplifiers with single-ended output terminals. The circuit can be realised with only two amplifiers; using three, the two capacitors required can be earthed.

A 150 kV pulsed cold-cathode glow-discharge electron gun is used to initiate an atmospheric-pressure carbon-dioxide laser. The gun is mechanically simple, efficient and undamaged by vacuum failure. Laser-output pulses of 1.6 J and 5 μs duration have been obtained from an active volume of approximately 70 cm3.

A simple method for designing doubly terminated all-pole ladder filters using lossy reactive components is described. Losses in series with inductances or in parallel with capacitances may be freely assigned without the constraint of uniformity. The method requires the solution of a set of simultaneous equations; no network analysis is needed. An example of a 7th-order filter is included, and the algorithm for generating the equations is given.

It is shown that the transfer of longitudinal current to the outer surface of a long length of braided coaxial cable, such as might be used in a ‘leaky-feeder’ radiocommunication system, is a function of other parameters besides the surface-transfer impedance of the braid. The dielectric is particularly significant.

Finite-element coupling matrices, independent of element geometry and material properties, are presented for the high-order finite-element analysis of acoustic-wave propagation in homogeneous isotropic media. Some new results for ridge guides are used to illustrate the formulation.
