Silicon IMPATT diodes, utilising holes as the drifting carrier, have been fabricated. An output power of 0.5 W with 12% efficiency at X band was obtained.

Measurements, supported by an approximate theoretical prediction, show that the radiation loss in a coupled micro-strip-resonator system can vary greatly between the different modes of resonance. The implications for the realisation of filter networks are indicated; in particular, the effects of radiation loss cannot be represented by a simple reduction of the unloaded Q factor of the individual resonators.

An 8-tap programmable analogue matched filter, based on hybriding surface-acoustic-wave and microelectronic techniques, has been fabricated, utilising quartz and four diode rings per tap. This device has demonstrated the ability to process both periodic phase-shift-keyed (p.s.k.) coded wave-forms for synchronisation acquisition and aperiodic p.s.k. orthogonal codes for data transfer.

The frequency response of a microstrip ring resonator with small terminal couplings is discussed. For resonators consisting of nonuniform lines, there is shown to be resonance splitting in the transfer function.

It is shown that two degenerate modes can be excited on a microstrip ring resonator. These modes can be used to realise a double-tuned circuit bandpass filter in microstrip technique.

A new easily integrable active RC biquadratic filter, with all the capacitors earthed, is described. The biquads can be directly cascaded without buffer stages. The sensitivities of the Q factor and ω0 to the various passive and active components are very low. Further, the sensitivity of the Q factor with respect to the passive elements can be made zero, making the filter easy to tune. Experimental results which agree with the theory are given for a lowpass Butterworth filter.

Using a suitably designed cavity, the negative conductance of X band Gunn diodes is derived from oscillation buildup characteristics when a steep bias voltage step is applied. By this method, a quick assessment of the diode negative conductance as a function of r.f. voltage amplitudes can be made.

The characteristics and performance of a 1 W, 1 GHz gridistor, an original field-effect silicon transistor with an embedded grid, has enabled us to achieve, in class A, a 1 W power output with a gain of 7 dB and a good linearity in output-power variation with input power, with a common-grid configuration.

Measurements of acoustic-surface wave propagation losses in air have yielded the following for GaAs at 1 GHz: 3.62 dB/μs for the [211] cut, [111] propagating orientation, and 4.22 dB/μs for the [110] cut, [100] propagating orientation. Air loading for these two cuts is 0.27 and 0.40 dB/μs, respectively. These results are independent of surface quality for defects up to 0.04 wavelengths in size.

In the letter is reported the measurement of broadening of pulses in glass fibres using a GaAs injection laser diode as an emitter and a germanium photodiode as a detector. We found broadening of about 5 ps/m for a multimode fibre and 0.6 ps/m for a self-focusing glass fibre.

An LiNbO3 surface-acoustic-wave delay line has been constructed which has an 8½ dB single-transit loss and a triple-transit suppression (relative to the single transit) greater than 40 dB over a 25% bandwidth. The device uses a multistrip coupler to divert the unwanted acoustic reflection into an acoustic absorber. No extra production steps are required.

Every set of complementary n-variable switching functions can be computed by a maximum of 2n−1 conditional bubble transfer operations and one bubble generation. All input variables are replicated. A minimisation method for the number of operations is given.

The performance of degenerate acoustic-surface-wave convolvers, fabricated on CdS, LiNbO3 and Bi12GeO20, is compared. Measured values of the bilinear coefficient indicate that acoustoelectric bunching can contribute significantly to dynamic range.

A network has optimal connectivity if the number of alternative paths between any pair of vertices is the greatest possible with the given number of lines and vertices. A new class of optimal configurations is described, which is sufficiently extensive to enable networks to be devised with almost any required connectivity, provided that the number of vertices is factorisable. Some implications for communication networks are discussed.

A square-law detector for picosecond baseband pulse comparison techniques has been realised using the pyroelectric effect. By using thin-film techniques, a broadband signal transfer to the detector was obtained. The theoretical principles of the detector and some applications are briefly discussed. Attention is given to measurements of pulse-energy content, pulse autocorrelation function and pulse crosscorrelation function.
