An f.s.k. pulse modulator has been developed which uses two cavity modes for the two frequency states of a Gunn oscillator. 300 megapulse operation with about 10 mW microwave output at 13.25 and 20.7 GHz for baseband pulses of about 3 V into 50 Ω was obtained.

A method is presented for determining the relative strengths of acoustic lattice scattering and screened impurity scattering in heavily doped semiconductors from measurements of their Hall mobility and thermoelectric power. Screening of the impurity centres by the free carriers results in an appreciable reduction in the impurity-scattering contribution, and this effect is estimated for heavily doped n type germanium.

The parametric interaction of surface-wave signals propagating in opposite directions on a lithium-niobate substrate has been used to obtain the crosscorrelation of digitally coded input signals. The output 4 cm interdigital transducer was separated from the substrate by a 2000 Å SiO2 layer to eliminate scattering into volume waves. Matched-filter responses for both amplitude-modulated and biphase Barker codes of up to 13 bits have been obtained.

A new expansion for the signal-flowgraph determinant is presented, which gives the complete graph determinant in terms of the subgraph determinants and the loop gains. This expansion is useful for the evaluation of the determinant when the signal flowgraph is complicated and when there are many nontouching loops.

A ‘1kT-pulse’ excitation of a high-Q-factor LC ringing circuit is defined, and a filter configuration is described which allows the detection of such a pulse with good s.n.r. (signal/noise ratio) and excellent τr, (resolving time). S.N.R.s considerably larger than unity were found experimentally, in reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations.

The attenuation characteristics of two corrugated rectangular waveguides propagating the dominant hybrid mode are shown to be significantly better over a wide bandwidth than those for a plain guide propagating the TE10 mode.

The differential-capacitance technique for the evaluation of doping profiles of the low-doped side of strongly asymmetrical p-n junctions may be extended to diffused junctions, provided that the actual profile is approximated by an exponential function. An easy fit between experimental and theoretical curves allows evaluation of the two parameters of the exponential approximation.

A modification of Guillemin's procedure for constructing the g̅ matrix is suggested, which ensures that the submatrix Bss shall be nonsingular. The use of the criterion for writing the arbitrary entries of the first row of the g̅ matrix is simple and straightforward when s is of low order.
Recession depth in metallic conductors at low frequencies

It is shown that, at low frequencies, for nonmagnetic conductors of thickness l, the recession depth is l/3 and is independent of frequency and of the conductivity of the material. This simple relationship for low frequencies allows a graph to be drawn of the recession depth over the whole frequency range, since, at high frequencies, the recession depth is one-half of the skin depth δ.
