A self-consistent determination of the intervalley deformation-potential constant ΞΓL of GaSb is presented. The method used involves comparison of the measured microwave conductivity with Monte Carlo calculations. The value found for ΞΓL was 3 × 108 eV/cm.

A simple technique for the implementation of an adaptive equaliser is a gradient-seeking method. Two critical parameters associated with adaptive equalisation are the rate of convergence and the steady-state mean-square error attainable. When a fixed gradient is used in the gradient-search procedure for an adaptive equaliser, rapid convergence and a small steady-state mean-square error are two conflicting requirements. Use of a variable gradient parameter at each iteration provides a good compromise. A method for iteratively computing the gradient parameter is introduced, so that the random walk in the gradient-search procedure is executed, on the average, with decreasing step size as the iterative algorithm converges.

An acoustic-surface-wave multistrip coupler, formed into the shape of a U, may be used on materials of high electro-mechanical coupling coefficient to convert a bidirectional interdigital transducer into a unidirectional transducer with negligible loss of bandwidth. The U-shaped coupler by itself acts as a normal-incidence mirror, and can have a reflection loss of less than 2 dB over a 60% bandwidth. Both devices are constructed of evaporated aluminium by existing photolithographic techiques. No special polishing operations or extra electrical components are required.

A new modulation method for data transmission is described for use on groupband communication channels (60–108 kHz), which is compatible with the existing group- and supergroup-reference pilots. Dual single-sideband modulation permits a basic transmission rate of 48 kbit/s, which can be extended to 72 or 96 kbit/s by means of special multilevel coding.

This letter indicates a useful extension of the duality which has already been recognised as relating the calculation of static inductance and capacitance of microstrip lines supported by a substrate with scalar permeability and permittivity. Values of characteristic impedance and guide wavelength obtained by this simplified and more exact approach are compared with previously published results.

A high-speed read-only memory is described in which the stored program may be changed easily at low cost. An access time of less than 100 ns has been achieved in an experimental 8192-bit version of the store.

It is shown that a type of ‘bandpass’ linear time-variant differential equation has an equivalent ‘lowpass’ linear time-variant differential equation. The solution of the equivalent equation by computational techniques may proceed at a much higher rate than solution of the original equation, and offers simple computation of the amplitude and phase of the system narrowband response.

A computer program for determining the exact equiripple approximation of a linear phase characteristic is described. The program is based on a recently introduced method for the approximation of a linear phase characteristic in which only linear equations are involved. A comparison with the Cheby̅shev type of approximation of a constant-delay characteristic is also given.

A new kind of calorimeter, designed for the absolute measurement of radiation power, is described. The calorimeter contains a blackened radiation absorber in the form of a flat capacitor made of BaTiO3 ceramic. The calorimeter is suitable for measurements in the power range of from several milliwatts to about 1 W, in the wavelength region between visible and several microns, with an accuracy of within 3%.

By combining the oscillator-bias-circuit equation with Kurokawa's expressions for radio-frequency noise, a general theory of r.f.(or intrinsic) noise, up-converted (or modulation) noise and down-converted noise and their mutual relationships is developed. Special applications to the IMPATT-diode oscillator are discussed.

A method is presented for the calculation of the field in the image space of a stepped reflector, when the incident field is a plane wave inclined at an angle to the reflector axis. Each field component is obtained as a Fourier series in the azimuthal variable of the image plane.
