It is shown that the radiation from double heterostructure injection lasers is polarised with the electric field in the plane of the junction (TE waves), owing to mirror reflectivities at the nonnormal angles of incidence which are peculiar to these devices.

Efficient operation of lithium-niobate delay lines over bandwidths approaching one octave is reported. The transducers are of a 3-electrode (N = 1) interdigital design. Broad bandwidth to the series-resonant transducer is obtained by the use of a lumped-element impedance invertor coupling network. A 9.1 μs delay line is described, which gives 55% 3 dB bandwidth centred at 235 MHz with 25 dB minimum loss and over 50 dB minimum triple-transit suppression.

It is shown that a supercritical GaAs c.w. Gunn diode with a cathode doping notch and doping profile sloping upwards from the cathode to anode may act as a stabilised amplifier at high bias voltage. This profile is similar to that in many present-day devices, and may provide a more practical way of increasing the field uniformity so that the noise figure may be reduced, as described by Thim. It is suggested that this mode of operation may be more relevant to the operation of supercritical amplifiers than other stabilisation mechanisms involving large anode fields.

The possibility of constructing computer programs with the capability of generating detailed information on the scattering characteristics of a wide class of perfectly conducting cylinders of arbitrary cross-section in the ‘resonance’ range has made further investigation of the ‘point-matching’ technique of some interest. In the letter, the utility of the point-matching method is explored for a class of quadrilateral cylinders when the region exterior to the scatterer can be described by a set of overlapping domains within which the field can be expanded in terms of complete eigenfunction expansions.

Generalised star graphs are defined, and a general formula is given for the number of (spanning) trees in the incomplete graphs resulting from the deletion of such subgraphs from a complete graph. Multigraph variations of the star are indicated.

Broadband-admittance measurements have been made on dummy S4 diode packages mounted in a coaxial line. By comparing these with the theoretical admittance of a lumped-component equivalent circuit for the package and its mount similar to that of Getsinger, a consistent set of mount-independent equivalent-circuit parameters for the package has been derived.

The accurate measurement of small discontinuities in microstrip by conventional means is limited by the imperfections of the microstrip to coaxial transition. By using a resonant technique where such imperfections cause only 2nd-order errors, the equivalent circuit of microstrip discontinuities can be measured. To demonstrate the method, a 90° corner, with and without a chamfer, has been measured.

The method of moments, when applied to a stable system, sometimes fails by giving an unstable model. The implications are examined, and an auxiliary performance criterion is proposed which stabilises the model without destroying the simplicity of the method.

Two families of maximally flat approximations to the ideal filter can be deduced as particular cases of polynomials which are solutions of a hypergeometric equation. By studying the generalised hypergeometric function, one finds a continuous range of filter characteristics. This allows a control of the compromise to be made between the features of the transient response, the amplitude and the phase.

Companded encoders of high resolution, such as may be required for p.c.m. transmission of high-quality sound-programme signals, can be realised using the ‘counting’ principle. It has been found possible to describe the addition of noise to a microwave carrier by a rocket-exhaust jet in terms of a simple quantitative model of incoherent volume scattering by the turbulent discontinuities in the jet. The power scattered is spread throughout the noise spectrum by the variation with position in the jet of the magnitude of the mean gas-velocity vector. Comparison between computer calculation and experimentally determined amplitude and phase noise data is found to be excellent.

An approximate theory is presented to account for the scattering of focused electromagnetic waves by a turbulent rocket-exhaust jet. The predicted noise spectrum is found to be in good agreement with experimental results obtained at 9 and 14 GHz. However, it is recognised that the transverse-beam configuration is rather insensitive to variations in certain jet parameters, such as the turbulence scale.
