The effect of natural dispersion on the bandwidth of a glass-fibre transmission line is analysed. It is shown that, if typical optical glasses are used, the limiting pulse rate, in both cladded fibres and those having a parabolic radial variation of refractive index, is not likely to exceed 10 Gbit/s over a distance of 10 km. The effect of the optical breakdown strength of the glass is also considered.

A holographic system is described for producing a 2-dimensional picture in real time using stationary transmitters and receivers. The principle of operation relies on the fact that several holograms can be recorded in one plane if multiple frequencies are used in the recording process.

A complementary pair of embedding principles for the differential-input earthed-output operational amplifier are combined to obtain a general-purpose resistive embedding which is universal from the strict synthesis point of view in that all four types of controlled source (‘transactor’) may be realised with either sign.

A simple and accurate method of determining the channel length of m.o.s. transistors after manufacture is presented. The technique relies on various 3-terminal capacitance measurements, from which the gate-channel capacitance and hence channel length may be obtained.

Jones and Parzen have studied the problem of spectral analysis of stationary normal time series with missing observations. The letter presents an alternative procedure which applies to nonnormal series as well. This procedure consists in extrapolating the observed samples into the missed-samples interval, and thereby estimating the new autocovariance and spectral-density functions.

The measured admittance is unaffected up to a measuring r.f. potential of r.m.s. value five times the equivalent electron temperature, except in a frequency range in which the admittance is affected by a potential exceeding half the electron temperature. This range is also that of the resonance probe, but it is concluded that any connection between the two effects is indirect.

The approximate phase characteristics of the space-charge waves in bounded plasmas are developed assuming the charge density to be statistically distributed. The influence which the correlation function of the charge distribution has on the phase characteristics is also found.

Differential equations relating to forward- and backward-wave components in a nonuniform transmission line are studied. It is shown that the forward- and backward-wave components can be decoupled if correct values of the forward- and backward-wave impedances are chosen. These impedances satisfy Riccati-type differential equations. A knowledge of these impedances enables one to find the propagation factors corresponding to travelling waves in either forward or backward directions.

A general method is given for finding optimal values of the constants occurring in the numerical inversion of Laplace transforms. It is then shown that one particular set of constants obtained by this method ensures that the process of inversion is well adapted to transforms which arise frequently in the analysis of dynamical systems and in other applications.

Noise radiation corresponding to a temperature of about 108 K is observed from InSb-NiSb when it is pulsed with a high field at liquid-nitrogen temperature. A brief assessment is made of its merits and demerits as a substandard noise source for the calibration of millimetre-wavelength receivers.

Finite-range effects are incorporated into Schelkunoff's pyramidal-horn gain formula, which is arranged as the product of in-phase aperture gain and E and H plane range and slant-length gain-reduction factors. These factors, readily computed, permit the on-axis gain of a horn to be obtained from two single-line curves.

It is shown that the low-level minority-carrier lifetime in p+-n-n+ diodes obtained by measuring the stored charge can be in error owing to the charging of the depletion-layer capacitance. A simple method is described for eliminating the error due to this charge.

A simple alternative solution is given to the problem of obtaining the network parameters of a class of multilayer RC lines considered recently by Singhal and Wing. It is further shown that, as in the single-layer lines, the transmission parameters are interrelated, and the transposes of these parameters satisfy either the current or the voltage differential equation of the multilayer lines. An exact equivalent circuit, using ideal transformers, is given for this class of multilayer lines in terms of single-layer lines.

An estimate of the minimum attainable value of the peak of the crosscorrelation between two binary sequences having small aperiodic autocorrelation is given. This is based on considerations of cross-spectral energy and the optimum expected distribution of the crosscorrelation values for the two baseband sequences. The bound (3/2 L)½ for a length L appears to fit computed values for short-length sequences.
