Experimental verification of a lateral wave above a lossy interface

Lateral waves have been recognised and theoretically investigated, but their existence has not been verified experimentally under controlled laboratory conditions. The present work describes an experiment consisting of microwave-field measurements above a lossy dielectric interface under conditions where a strongly dominant lateral wave is theoretically predicted. The results agree well with the expected field, and therefore confirm the existence of lateral waves.

The letter describes a specially designed coiled transducer for the magnetostatic mode. The conversion loss of the magneto-static-mode delay line provided with the proposed transducer has been found reduced down to 10.5 dB at L band.

A circuit analysis with a numerical solution of the voltage-controlled negative resistance, described in an earlier letter, is presented and compared with measured characteristics. The agreement is shown to be satisfactory, provided that the characteristics of the f.e.t. are accurately described both before and after pinchoff.

A simple method is outlined for the design of the optimal linear partial-state feedback control for the time-invariant state regulator assuming that the initial-state mean and variance are known. The cost functional minimised is average, over all initial states, of the usual integral quadratic cost. The method is compared with that recently suggested by Dabke.

The author criticises Macfarlane's technique and design example on the grounds of difficulties in evaluating the plant-matrix eigenvalues and in ensuring that the parallel assembly of subsidiary control loops also shall meet the specification. A more straightforward alternative technique is suggested. A reply by MacFarlane follows.

Mode-locked helium-neon lasers have been used to propagate pulses of ∼1 ns duration along multimode cladded glass fibres. Any pulse spreading due to dispersion in a 33 m length of fibre is less than 0.5 ns which is the limit of resolution of the measuring equipment. This result indicates that a pulse transmission rate of at least 33 MHz may be possible over a distance of 1 km.

A general expression for the probability-density function of a specularly fading signal-plus-noise minus noise has been obtained. Such an expression is frequently required for the analysis of different types of communication systems such as f.s.k. systems or pulse radar systems.

When the concentration of diffusing impurity in a semiconductor approaches or exceeds the intrinsic concentration of electrons or holes at the temperature of diffusion, the resulting partial differential equation becomes nonlinear. A computer program has been prepared to obtain the profile of the diffused impurity for such a situation.

A good deal of argument has been devoted to the relative merits of various established classification schemes. In the letter, a number of these apparently different classifiers are shown to be special cases of a general classifier. The optimum performance obtainable from each is much the same with a given set of design data, so that the choice in any particular case depends largely on the cost of implementation. Significant improvements in performance might be obtainable by improving, or making better use of, the design data, but not by changing to a different classifier.

The attenuation characteristics are predicted for the dominant hybrid mode in corrugated circular waveguide. Over a substantial frequency band, which includes the optimum frequency for antenna-feed applications, the attenuation is lower than that of the dominant mode in a circular wave-guide without corrugations.

A local concept of stability is defined at a point according to the slope of the system trajectory at that point. The method gives a particularly clear understanding of system operation in the phase-space. The concept can be extended to cover the entire state-space for linear and nonlinear systems.

The formal use of the Penrose pseudoinverse in the solution of the multivariable-controller-synthesis problem was Outlined by the author in a previous letter. In the present letter, the pseudoinverse is evaluated in canonical form to provide a simple computational algorithm for the specification of the proportionality matrices in the control system. An illustrative example is provided.

It is demonstrated, with the aid of simple facsimile far-field (Fourier-transform) holograms, that optical images can be obtained from limited far-field information and that the quality of these images is also dependent on the spatial frequency of the ‘carrier fringes’ which lace the hologram. The use of a synthetic reference wave in a practical case offers advantageously the possibility of high ‘carrier-fringe’ frequencies and hence high-quality optical images.

A rapidly and remotely tuned u.h.f. circulator has been constructed. It gives excellent isolation over a 5 MHz bandwidth, the centre frequency of which may be fixed anywhere within a 20 MHz range merely by changing the bias voltage on a varactor diode. The 20 MHz range chosen may itself be varied over a 200 MHz range by changing the values of certain capacitors.

The letter describes a 2-terminal circuit which behaves as a current-controlled negative resistance of adjustable magnitude. A ‘zero’ resistance state also occurs which possesses Zener-diode-like characteristics in which the ‘Zener’ voltage is resistance-controlled.

A new mounting technique has been developed that allows CdS acoustoelectric oscillators to be operated with plate thicknesses between 25 and 40 μm. Unlike conventional 200 μm-thick devices that generate a variety of spectra, the thin devices oscillate exclusively at mode numbers 3, 6, 9 etc. in a phase-locked series. This spectrum persists even if the voltage or conductivity is varied by more than a factor of three. Oscillations have been observed with applied voltage as low as 2.5 V and total power dissipation below ¼ mW.
