A system is described which achieves wide-angle beam scanning from a parabolic reflector antenna by movement of an adaptive primary-feed system about a defined locus. The feed system performs a sampled spatial Fourier transformation of the focal-plane field in order to obtain a uniform power distribution prior to phase compensation and summation. Scanning of ±15 beamwidths with less than 0.5dB loss in gain and negligible beam distortion has been demonstrated experimentally.

Complex solutions to the characteristic equation for wave propagation along a lossless dielectric cylinder are shown to exist, suggesting that the well known general features of leaky waves may be exhibited by this particular structure. The influence of losses is discussed.

Microwave amplification has been obtained from silicon diodes operated in avalanche-resonance pumped modes. D.C.-r.f. conversion efficiencies were 25% at 1.3GHz for a saturation gain of 12dB and a bandwidth of 3%.

An RC differentiating network is described in which both elements are nonlinear. The new network is compared with circuits in which the capacitative element only is nonlinear, and some improvements in its pulse-shaping properties are demonstrated.

It is shown, by means of high-speed photography and electric-field probes, that an arc, which starts from an electrode slightly elevated above a water surface, propagates with more than just its moving end in electrical contact with the surface.

It is shown that travelling high-field-domain-mode oscillations in GaAs, with n0l > 1012cm−2, can be suppressed by attaching a dielectric material of high permittivity (BaTiO3) to the surfaces of the GaAs. Experimental results observed with a sampling oscilloscope are given.

A general method for handling partial products in a parallel multiplier is proposed. It leads to a network of AND gates and full adders, availables as i.c.s which can have an operation time of less than 10 ns per bit of the result.

The orthogonality relationship for modes in waveguide containing inhomogeneous bianisotropic materials is derived using the concept of linear operators. The properties of the associated adjoint waveguide are explored. The results are restricted to cases where there exists axial independency of all parameters.

Exact calculations are made of the capacitance of linearly graded Si p-n junctions, taking the influence of electrons and holes into account. The results agree well with the experimental data for gradients of less than 1022cm−4. The discrepancies for gradients larger than 1022cm−4 are probably due an interface-state mechanism.

Pasek's technique for determining the inertial and armature time constants of a separately excited d.c. motor requires the use of data curves which were originally developed assuming no viscous damping. Corrected data curves have been calculated, which show that little error results from using Pasek's method even when relatively large amounts of damping are present.

Two active networks are presented which are suitable for the realisation of a second-order allpass function. Each uses one differential-input operational amplifier and RC networks. The realisation is achieved to within a constant multiplier always smaller than unity.
