When spatial frequencies in an image are to be related to the signal derived from scanning, a conventional rectangular raster is not ideal, and some form of spiral scan is to be preferred. The principles involved in generating a square-spiral scanning pattern, which scans at a constant rate, are described.

Complex microwave incremental conductivity of InSb at 77°K in the presence of a high steady electric field has been calculated assuming a displaced Maxwellian distribution function. The calculated values of the real and imaginary parts of the conductivity are found to be in close agreement with the experimental results for both the parallel and perpendicular orientation of the microwave field.

A waveguide-fed mica aperture was the site of breakdown. The development of breakdown was followed both in time and space. It was found that the initial stages of breakdown proceeded as expected; the final luminosity distribution, however, seems to suggest that the initial plasma configuration results in a drastic change in the Efield distribution across the aperture.

A computational method of analysing an infinitely thin iris in a waveguide is described. Certain difficulties arise in the truncation of infinite series used in field representation, and these are illustrated with computed results. When these difficulties are overcome, good agreement with results derived by conventional techniques can be obtained.

A novel technique has been developed for measurement of dispersion and wavelength in microstrip transmission line laid down on an Al2O3 substrate. The frequency range so far investigated has been 4–12GHz, although the method could be satisfactorily used at far higher frequencies. The measurement accuracy is better than within 1%. Techniques for producing well matched transitions to any thickness substrate have also been established.

Microwave holographic reconstruction of the metal objects inside a purse was achieved by a nonscanning method. A microwave field was used for both constructing and reconstructing the holographic image. The visualisation of the microwave field was performed by both Polaroid and liquid-crystal techniques. The frequency used was 34.26GHz.

This letter describes a compact source of multiple streams of pseudorandom events, with independently variable mean rates and small mutual crosscorrelations, based on two very long binary msequences. The interevent distributions are shown to be accurately geometric, and negative binomial processes generated from them are also satisfactory.

The small-signal stability of a transferred-electron device (t.e.d.) driven with a voltage generator of finite impedance is discussed. It is shown that the series impedance significantly alters the stability condition. Computations for a resistor in series with the t.e.d. show that the maximum n0L product for stable operation increases with increasing series resistance. The practical implications of this result are discussed.

For a slab of uniform negative-differential-conductivity medium, such as nGaAs, it is shown that unstable plane electromagnetic waves may exist when the thickness exceeds a critical value determined by the product of differential conductivity and length. When the slab is terminated on both sides by vacuum, the critical |σ|L is found to be 2/377S. This instability explains the error in a paradoxical result recently published, namely that a thick slab of negative-conductance material should attenuate rather than amplify incident waves.

A special expansion for the associated Legendre functions and their derivatives is employed to compute the integer eigenvalues for higher-order modes in a conical horn. The resulting plot of these eigenvalues, as a function of horn flare angle, is used to provide graphically the noninteger values corresponding to other flare angles of the horn.

An approximation technique is used to calculate numerically the input impedance of a short antenna immersed in a warm plasma driven from a coaxial air line. The effect of the gap configuration is observed to be significant on the antenna reactance only.

The instrumental-variable technique for parameter estimation is applied when the input is a pseudorandom binary sequence (p.r.b.s.). The instrumental variables proposed are time-weighted elements of a p.r.b.s., and this is shown to be equivalent to obtaining the mean value of several estimates obtained from noisy measurements. The estimates of the parameters are asymptotically unbiased.

The letter reports the operation of a degenerate parametric amplifier which utilises the self-pumping action of the oscillating domain capacitance in the Gunn effect. Gains greater than 20dB at 5.98GHz have been obtained with the Gunn sample oscillating at 11.96GHz. Amplification is also reported in the normal negative-resistance mode, and an experiment is described which is designed to distinguish between the two modes of amplification.
