The experimental dependence of flicker noise on the geometry parameters of m.i.s. field-effect transistors is presented. It is found that the gate-referred r.m.s. noise voltage en in the flicker region is inversely proportional to the square root of the gate width of the device. It is also observed that en is directly proportional to the effective gate-insulator thickness. These experimental results are in good agreement with the published results of flicker-noise analyses. Thus, for a given surface State density, it is possible to reduce the magnitude of flicker noise by a control of device geometry parameters.

A method developed to generate Lyapunov functionals for partial differential equations is applied to an nth-order ordinary linear differential equation. The resulting function V has the Hermite stability matrix in its derivative V. The function is efficient as the sufficient stability conditions obtained from V are also necessary.

The high-conductance state of chalcogenide glass switches is described in terms of Joule heating within the material. It is shown that the voltage drop observed in the ‘On-state’ occurs principally at the electrodes. This permits an explanation of the current and voltage traces observed during switching.

Based on the operating-point trajectory theory, the build-up/ quenching time of triggered Gunn domains is examined by means of a digital computer. A simple relation is given between the amplitude and time of the trigger pulse.

Finite-element coupling matrices are given for hybrid-mode problems in waveguide structures. The matrices refer to Nth-order polynomial expansions of the field, where N = 1, 2, 3, 4 and are antisymmetric and independent of the shape of the element triangle.

Logical systems are often represented using the Turing-machine concept. A design method is described whereby the normal transition tables for a Turing machine may be translated into a state table defining the control unit as a finite-state machine, and a special shift-register configuration in place of the computing tape. Design equations and circuits are given for a 4-state Turing machine embodying a 2-symbol alphabet.

Recent theoretical results suggest a new interpretation of the magnetostatic surface modes in Brundle and Freedman's continuous-wave experiments. These results, which are strongly affected by the component of the k vector along the applied field, are in reasonable agreement with the experimental values.

Doppler techniques do not aid detection by shipborne radar of small (drifting) surface targets in sea clutter, and such targets have no velocity spectrum distinguishable from that of the clutter. However, clutter decorrelation by rapid antenna scan, followed by camera or direct-view storage-tube integration, can give impressive gains in target/clutter visibility. With relative-motion displays, own ship's motion severely limits possible integration time by shifting the effective spot area of integration as the target is approached; this is neatly avoided by using a ‘true-motion’ display. Further gains may be possible (at least for hovercraft radar) by using an antenna with a vertical difference pattern in which the null is laid on the sea surface as a fence.

A high-power microwave technique has been used to measure the velocity/field characteristic of GaAs. A small increase in the threshold field has been observed when the temperature was increased from 40°C to 180°C.

The letter discusses the sums of m sequences generated by a feedback shift register where the summed sequences are not necessarily from successive stages. A method for obtaining all the possible probability-density functions is given. The particular case of five stages is studied in detail. It is found that, for this case and a number of other cases tested, the rth moment (or central moment) is identical for all the situations in which there are at least r interdependent stages in the sum.

The statistical properties of the reframing process in p.c.m. systems are analysed theoretically. Both expectation and standard deviation of the reframing time are expressed as functions of the framing word length, number of digits per frame, and reframing strategy parameters. Results are given both for 6.272 and 8.32 Mbit/s secondary p.c.m. telephone multiplexes.
