A class of sequential logic circuits that simulate dynamical systems is discussed, and it is shown that an augmentation operator is fundamental to such systems. The logic for this operator is presented for a specific instance of coding, and a simple simulation is described.

The existence of a special class of totally symmetric functions has been reported in an earlier letter. In this letter, a formal proof substantiating this existence is presented. It is also pointed out that in each ncube there are two such functions which are complements of each other.

In electro-optic-light-modulator design, it is desirable to know the potential distribution with in the crystal. The cell is represented by a mathematical model, and it is pointed out that this type of problem can be analysed by means of recently developed computing techniques. Details of the method are discussed and, for a specific modulator, computed values are compared with those obtained in practice.

It is argued that measurements made using microwave radio-metric techniques represent a true mean electron energy for the CO2 laser plasma. They agree well with some other experimental values, and excellently with a theoretically calculated value.

Factors affecting the short-term fluctuations of the frequency of c.w. HCN masers have been investigated. Improving the plasma stability reduced these fluctuations to 10 kHz (1 in 108) for an observation time of 0.5 s.

A Gunn oscillator was used to stabilise another by injection locking. Over an ambient temperature range of +50 to −20°C, the frequency drift of −0.46 MHz/degC was reduced to +1.4 kHz/degC. The practical limit to the stability is set by changes in the pulling of the control-source frequency, but some improvement is possible by increasing the isolation between the oscillators.

The frequency spectra between 1.8 and 3GHz of the microwave radiation emitted from ntype InSb samples orientated along the [110] direction showed maxima in a transverse magnetic field, which can be attributed to Doppler-shifted acoustic cyclotron resonance.

A method of generalising the linear concepts of state and state transition to include multiplicative nonlinearities is presented. Using the algebra of multidimensional arrays, nonlinearities are represented by power series of the Volterra form. The resulting index notation allows a direct translation into computer-program languages.

The initial time constants of the space-charge growth are evaluated for the region of nonuniform donor density and roughly estimated for the space-charge region at the cathode. The space-charge growth rate determines the domain-voltage time constants. These time constants are smaller than the time constant of a domain growing from the random fluctuations of the electric field.

Crosscorrelation using pseudorandom binary noise as the test signal is a well established technique for the identification of linear systems, but there are several practical difficulties. We show that two of these difficulties, namely the necessity to have fast clock rates and a long p.r.b.n. period can be eliminated by using interclock sampling and by analytically removing folding errors. Further, if a maximally orthogonal test sequence is used, bias or ripple difficulties are overcome, and the analysis is particularly simple and practically tractable.

By observing potential distributions and corresponding current waveforms of a partially dielectric-surface-loaded GaAs bulk element, it is found that a domain nucleated at the unloaded cathode region fades away under the loaded region, nucleating another new domain at the cathode. This fading decreases with time after the application of a bias voltage, and eventually several domains of the same size can coexist, keeping a constant separation between them.

It is shown that the form of multiplier Z(s) developed by Narendra and Yo Sung Cho for establishing the stability of feedback systems containing a single odd monotonic non-linearity is equally applicable to systems with a monotonic nonlinear feedback. The constraints on the coefficients of Z(s) are further relaxed.

A new procedure is described for the realisation of a voltage transfer function C(s) by an earthed RC network incorporating a finite-gain amplifier. The method is applicable, barring a few minor restrictions, to a general G(s), and can realise zeros of transmission on the positive real axis.

The characteristics of the switching phenomena observed in chalcogenide glasses are described in terms of the Joule heating within the material. Calculations for an infinite-slab geometry are given. The model is also used to explain the nonohmic behaviour observed in the low-conductance state.

A Green's function of the vector potential for a microstrip is derived on the basis of the image theory after Silvester and the duality property of electric and magnetic fields of the TEM mode. It is also shown that the stationary equation similar to the variational equation for the electrostatic capacitance of the microstrip is given for its inductance with a magnetic substrate.
