A binary f.s.k. system, where the i.f. filter has transmittance peaks at two frequencies separated by a large distance in comparison to the bit rate, is considered. Experimental confirmation of the system transient response when the filters are third-order Butterworth is presented. A brief discussion of the error probability of such a system, and a possible application of the nature of the transient response to allow null-zone detection, is given.

An alternative way of looking at waveguide-below-cutoff resonators for tuning active devices is considered. By treating the circuit as a TEM transmission-line resonator, a simple design technique is possible. Tuning is shown to be accomplished by varying the characteristic impedance of the TEM line. A simple way of obtaining a large increase in the mechanical tuning range is suggested.

Direct measurements of the spin and elastic contributions to the magnetoelastic delay are reported. These experiments use the fact that spin waves are frequency-shifted by a field step. Comparison with theory is shown to be satisfactory.

A fast combinational iterative array is described which may be used, with simple additional gating, to convert data in 8421 or 2421 binary-decimal code into binary code. The array cells, which have a simple interconnection pattern, are currently available as medium-scale integration devices.

A new method of measuring transient load angle of a synchronous machine system is described which self-compensates for the variation of base frequency of the system. The measurement system was designed for use with an ultraviolet recorder.

The letter deals with the theory of propagation of surface magnetostatic waves in a transversely magnetised thin y.i.g. slab. The effect of boundary conditions on the propagation characteristics of these waves are emphasised. Particular attention is paid to the lowest-order (n=0) mode.

A method is presented for measuring the load angle of a synchronous machine, which has a time delay much shorter than methods previously described. In addition, a signal suitable for control and recording purposes is available with a minimum of further delay.

Some preliminary results from experiments designed to lead to quantitative voltage measurement in the scanning-electron microscope are presented. The experimental technique is based on the use of a control loop which stabilises the operating conditions of the secondary-electron collector of the scanning-electron microscope by appropriately defining the voltage at the output lead of the specimen. This technique has already been described, and a version of it has been used for quantitative voltage measurement with a low-energy electron beam. The results described here show improvement in linearity and extension of useful dynamic range of the standard secondary-electron collector system provided in the ‘Stereo-scan’ electron microscope.

A new form of combined pulse modulator using integral pulse-frequency modulation and pulse-width modulation is proposed in the letter. Using this modulator in a feedback system, a nonlinear discrete equivalent system is established, and a method for computation of state trajectories is indicated. It is also shown that systems having pulse-frequency modulation only or pulse-width modulation only reduce to special cases.

The propagation time of a linear system, defined as the group delay at zero frequency, is given by the time centroid of its response to unit impulse. Based on this, a method of measurement is described which is independent of the shape of either the input or output time functions.

A new type of stripline resonator is introduced. This is a compact microstrip resonator separated by a pair of notches from the feeder line. The width of the resonator is equal to, or smaller than, the feeder line. The resonator is suitable for d.c. biasing for various applications.

The crosscorrelation of a harmonic signal buried in severe noise with another of the same frequency decreases by a constant factor when clipping occurs. Calculation of this factor for a Gaussian noise shows that signal detection may be enhanced by a factor of 2.3 by overdriving the measuring channel.
