In some reflex klystrons, modulation disturbances are caused by ions and slow electrons in the electron beam. These disturbances occur only under specific operating conditions and are not always unambiguously reproducible. A method is outlined which already allows the tendency towards such disturbances to be measured.

Measurements of pulsed electron currents in compressed nitrogen show that appreciable attachment occurs to oxygen impurity of the order of 10 parts per million, and that the process depends on the partial pressure of oxygen, as well as on the ratio of electric field and gas density, E/p.

An equipment has been designed and developed capable of combining 12 unrelated start-stop and synchronous telegraph channels of various speeds and formats using time-division-multiplex techniques. The general principles of terminal synchronisation between multiplexer and demultiplexer are described, together with a detailed description of the techniques used to transmit a synchronous 75 baud telegraph channel.

A GaAs laser diode has been shown to emit a regular train of pulses as short as 150ps if it is pumped near the threshold by a pulsed direct current and a high-frequency component (100–1000MHz). This behaviour agrees with results of a numerical analysis of simple rate equations.

A fast combinational circuit is described which can be used both as a multiplier and as an adder, either separately or together, giving a parallel binary output. The structure, which is completely iterative in terms of both cell logic and cell-interconnection pattern, is advantageous in large-scale integration.

Carbon resistors, operated at very low currents, showed a quasistationary noise spectrum at very low frequencies. Over long periods the stationary noise power density followed S(ω) = Kω−β, with β close to unity. Then sudden large fluctuations occurred ending in another stationary period, but K may have changed its value. This behaviour explains a difficulty in repeating l.f. noise measurements.

A Fourier analysis of a symmetrically placed microstrip line in a dielectric-loaded guide is performed. Computed results of the dispersion for the fundamental even Ez-odd Hz mode are presented.

The resonances of an axially magnetised plasma column with hollow and perfectly conducting cores have been investigated using the quasistatic approach. It is found that the two resonances of a hollow plasma cylinder are shifted, but the single resonance of a plasma cylinder with a perfectly conducting core is split into three if an external magnetostatic field is impressed in the axial direction.

Conditions for convergence of the sequence Neill has used to find the periodic steady-state response of nonlinear networks are shown, by counterexample, to be more stringent than has been claimed. This result is explained and a sufficient condition for convergence is derived. It is recommended that a more sophisticated iterative scheme be used.

The effect on mode propagation of small (with respect to wave-length) irregularities or imperfections in a dielectric waveguide is analysed. Asymptotically, for large frequencies, the power which is scattered in the form of radiation (not guided) has an ω2 behaviour, and that scattered into the modes obeys a 1/ω2 relationship. At the frequency of paramount interest for optical communication (cutoff for TM01 mode), the radiated power is 22dB larger than the power scattered into the HE11 mode.

If the circuit equations corresponding to a 'stiff' nonlinear circuit are formulated as Volterra integral equations, it is often found that a rapid and accurate solution may be obtained by separating the stiffness components from the main equations, the contribution of these components being subsequently reintroduced as a perturbation of the solution of the relaxed system.

A modification to the counter type of analogue-digital convertor, in which the comparator is replaced with an amplifier, is suggested. The difference between the input voltage and the staircase is applied to three amplitude discriminators to detect ¼, ½ and ¾ parts of a step.

A general analytical method has been given for switching-time calculations of a tunnel diode. The method is particularly useful for ready evaluation of switching speed under different circuit conditions, and the results show that the switching time depends on the average behaviour of the characteristics.

Methods based on the Rayleigh hypothesis (e.g. the point-matching method) for numerically solving wave-diffraction problems are shown to be equivalent to the exact extended-boundary-condition method. It is concluded that the Rayleigh hypothesis is exact, although, in general, it is necessary to interpret it in the generalised function sense.
