Three diaphragms are considered (capacitive, inductive and tuned window) on a storage-energy basis to determine whether there is any change in the behaviour of these in evanescent guides. It is found that all three are inductive when a guide is operated below the H10 cutoff.

A TEM-mode theory, recently advanced to explain the operation of evanescent-mode filters, is shown to be incorrect. The transition from conventional direct-coupled iris-type waveguide filters to evanescent-mode filters is shown qualitatively in two simple steps.

Brown and Spector's theory of the dielectric-rod aerial is extended and refined by considering the effect of the rod on the feed-radiation pattern. A correction function is deduced which includes an additional phase-correction term.

Possibilities of using incoherent carriers, amplitude-modulated by the message-modulated p.f.m., r.f.m. and p.l.m. have been investigated. It has been shown that, for noise bandwidths much smaller than the transmission bandwidth, efficient communication is possible, and s.n.r.s of 50–60dB are obtained for practical p.f.m.-a.m. and r.f.m.-a.m. systems. Some comparisons are also given.

The resolution of the real image formed by a hologram has been investigated experimentally with a view to overcoming the disadvantages of the present contact-print method of manufacturing microcircuits. A resolution of 4μm over an area of 2.5 cm diameter has been obtained so far.

In order to minimise the harmful influence of the ground reflections on antenna-pattern measurements, diffraction fences are frequently used. This letter treats the diffraction of the direct wave radiated by a directional antenna. The analysis is based on the Kirchhoff—Fresnel approximation of the diffracted field.

A mode of operation for avalanche-diode oscillators is described which depends for its application upon the controlled attainment of reverse-current densities in the range 104–107 A/cm2. It gives a current-controlled negative-resistance characteristic and leads to efficiencies of at least 60%. With present technology, it should be possible to operate the mode up to 10GHz.

The prebreakdown ionisation currents between parallel electrodes, d apart, were measured at fixed reduced fields as d was varied. Townsend alpha coefficients have been derived for CH3F, CH3Cl and CH3Br for 26 < E/p < 60 V cm−1 torr−1. Appreciable negative-ion formation seemed absent in CH3F and CH3Cl, whereas a small but constant attachment coefficient, η/p = 0.015 cm−1 torr−1 was observed in CH3Br.

A new two-transistor circuit suitable for driving pulses of well defined amplitude into low-impedance transmission line is described. Short-circuit-proof, and especially suited to integrated-circuit technology, it uses a nonlinear feedback technique which permits output pulse edges as fast as 1 ns to be obtained without a large device power dissipitation.

Previous work concerned with the performance of a nonlinear turboalternator model operating under short-circuit fault conditions is extended to consider the use of direct- and quadrature-axis rotor-excitation control related to velocity and acceleration measurements. Such control produces improved overall performance compared with previous results.
