A method is proposed for establishing quickly and reliably whether word misalignment of a triple ternary (4B3T) decoder exists and for its rapid realignment. The method does not refer to any frame structure present in the original binary signal.

Pulse-shape variations on a line connecting two high-speed-logic integrated circuits due to reflections are determined graphically using Bergeron's theory. Different line lengths with different characteristic impedances have been tested. Reflection effects on the circuit noise immunity are studied. Theory and measurements have shown good agreement.

Transit-time effects have been observed in silicon n-v-n s.c.l.c. solid-state devices, with the reciprocal transit-time frequency being bias dependent, and the oscillatory behaviour of the device high-frequency conductance being relatively reduced as expected. For n-v-n (silicon) s.c.l.c. solid-state devices, these results appear to be the first experimental evidence of such effects.

The problem of aperture blockage by a subreflector in a Cassegrainian antenna system is discussed. The Lorentz reciprocity theorem is used to derive an expression for the far field radiated by the Cassegrain system. It is suggested that the field scattered by the subreflector can be computed using Keller's geometrical theory of diffraction.

Two rules are derived to reduce a signal-flow graph when one of the node variables vanishes. Since the vanishing of a node variable in the flow graph of a network corresponds to either opening or short-circuiting a specific network branch, the derived rules render immediate uses in obtaining network parameters.

A method is given for the synthesis of shaped radiation patterns from circular apertures divided into zones of varying width. The radiation function is transformed into an associated function which can be described by a finite Fourier-Bessel series, the coefficients of which give the amplitudes required for each zone.

Pulsed operation of epitaxial GaAs transferred-electron oscillators at a bias voltage of ten times the threshold voltage is described. The operating frequency, 14.1 GHz, was close to the transit-time frequency of 13 GHz. A maximum power output of 800 mW at 10% efficiency was obtained at 1% duty cycle. The power output and efficiency decreased with increasing duty cycle, and this decrease is attributed to the decrease in the peak/valley ratio of GaAs with increasing lattice temperature.

A geometrical interpretation of Hamel's conditions for the existence of self-sustained oscillations in relay control systems with hysteresis is presented. On the basis of this interpretation, simple sufficient conditions are derived which ensure the absence of periodic motions, avoiding the necessity of solving the involved Hamel's relations.

The group velocity and dispersion of surface-wave modes propagating along a circular dielectric rod are computed and presented graphically in normalised form. The group velocity as each mode approaches the cutoff frequency is calculated approximately.

Binary numbers in transmission systems can be masked by other binary numbers occurring in the system at the same time. This type of interference limits the numbers which can be used in a system depending on the coding and the circuitry used. The problem is considered in application to a system called WISDOM.

Some stability properties of two gyrator circuits, described by Riordan, are investigated. It is shown that these circuits can attain low-frequency unstable modes of operation. Two alternative gyrator circuits are derived which are shown to be free from low-frequency unstable modes.

The letter gives details of a method of using a high-power two-phase induction motor as a servomotor in a positional servomechanism. The method utilises a constant-frequency power source and does not have the disadvantage of a permanently excited winding.

Simultaneous recovery of grading grids has been observed in a multigrid mercury-arc valve without the appearance of grid discharges in the recovery period. From this work it is concluded that a compact valve exhibiting rapid deionisation and recovery to potentials in excess of 250kV may be feasible. Such a valve could readily find applications for h.v.d.c. power transmission and for high-power modulators.

A second-order linear phase z transform transfer function is presented which precorrects for the amplitude distortion, introduced by the zero-order hold, over a specified frequency range. For this function, optimum coefficient values are given graphically which yield a minimum equal-ripple error characteristic.

An iterative procedure for generating trees and directed trees is described. The procedure will not introduce any redundancies, duplications, or cancellations of terms, and is readily adaptable for a digital computer. With minor modifications, the process may also be used to generate 2-trees and directed 2-trees, and for the evaluation of the numbers of trees, directed trees, 2-trees and directed 2-trees efficiently.
