The general electromagnetic field, when independent of axial distance, may be expressed as the sum of E parallel and H parallel partial fields. Exact solutions of the wave equation for the radial variation of the H parallel field are not numerous. Generalised refractive-index profiles are presented which permit transcendental solutions to be made.

A four-quadrant multiplier circuit using two identical f.e.t.s operated in the ohmic region is described. The temperature-dependent factors and the quadratic term in the f.e.t. characteristics are compensated, giving inherent temperature stability to the circuit performance and an accuracy better than 1 %.

An algebraic criterion is derived, which establishes whether or not the negative-semidefinite first difference of a quadratic-form Lyapunov function for a linear constant-coefficient difference equation, or the derivative of such a function for a linear constant-coefficient differential equation, can vanish identically along any trajectory of the free motion.

A method is given for determining a family of transfer functions by transforming the poles of a known transfer function. By means of a transformation derived from the Darlington one, the attenuation characteristics and the group transit-time characteristics of the system thus obtained are expressed by means of Cheby̅shev polynomials.

In this letter, the importance of a satisfactory voltage/current relationship in the analytical studies of the electric arc is stressed, and an improved empirical relation for static characteristic of an arc is proposed.

The construction of Au-GaAs Schottky diodes with forward current/voltage characteristics linearly exponential over more than eight decades of current is described. The characteristics of these diodes are shown to depend in part on the temperature used for bonding the contacts.

Recent letters have described two multiplier arrays. It is now proposed that these arrays are more versatile than was formerly supposed. They can be used both as multipliers and as adders, either separetely or together, giving a parallel binary output.

The application of ion implantation to the fabrication of Au-Si Schottky diodes with highly nonlinear capacitance/voltage characteristics is described. The capacitance/voltage characteristic and the derived impurity profile are given for a typical diode. The forward current/voltage characteristics are described, and an estimate of Au-Si barrier height is made.

A microwave-biased photoconductive detector operating in a cavity resonant at 36 GHz is described. The potential advantages of working at this high microwave frequency are outlined, and the microwave system is described. A photocurrent gain of 55 is reported, and measurements show that this value is degraded by about 25% at optical-modulation frequencies approaching 1 MHz.

The formation of simple pulse sequences, by the periodic gating of pulse trains, is considered as a method for generating sets of harmonically related frequencies at increased levels and with some suppression of unwanted harmonics. The method may be used to generate the carrier frequencies for multichannel transmission systems.

Thin-film sandwich devices of CdS-SiO-metal have been made. They have current/voltage behaviour characteristics of field emission from semiconductors. With reverse bias, the current is very much smaller. The field-emission current is greatly enhanced by illuminating the device with 2.41 and 2.54eV photons (from an argon-ion laser). Under pulsed laser excitation (pulse duration 1 μs) the enhanced emission persisted for more than 20ms. These experiments are analogous to some previous work on vacuum field emission. A possible mechanism for the enhanced emission is discussed.
