A linear convolution of two N-point sequences is computed by using N-point Fermat number transforms, so that the convolution length is doubled for a given modulo Fermat number. The algorithm is also suitable for other convolutional algorithms of number theoretic transforms.

Brillouin-gain profiles are measured for fused-silica core and GeO2-doped core fibres at wavelengths of 1286nm and 1550nm. The intrinsic Brillouin linewidth is found to vary as the square of optical frequency, as predicted for bulk fusedsilica. However, the experimentally evaluated Brillouin linewidths at both wavelengths are broader by a factor of 2.5 than those predicted for the bulk glass.

A process for making GaInAs/InP pin photodiodes based on atmospheric pressure MOVPE is described. The technique gives devices with very low dark currents (≪1 nA) and capacitances (<0.2pF). Yields on large area wafers greater than 80% can be achieved and extremely good reliability has been demonstrated (<0.4 FIT at 20°C).

New unity-gain buffer-based switched-capacitor S/H circuit and gain stages are described which have low sensitivity to buffer gain and offset voltage, and are only moderately sensitive to stray capacitances. The circuits are simple, require fewer switches and less capacitance and offer higher speed, lower noise and lower DC power consumption than opamp based gain stages.

A computationally efficient algorithm for locating complex zeros of real bandlimited signals is discussed. The amount of processing is minimal rendering the algorithm suitable for real time applications. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated for test signals by computer simulation and some results are presented.

Electrical characteristics of thin-film (100nm), accumulation-mode SOI p-channel MOSFETs are reported and compared to simulation. In the OFF regime, the p-type channel is fully depleted. As a result, very low values of leakage current are obtained. Very good threshold voltage control is also obtained.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering is used as a narrowband amplifier to demodulate and amplify FSK signals at bit rates up to 250 Mbit/s. Gain of as much as a factor of 1000 is obtained for a pump power of 12mW. Both pump and signal lasers are simple AlGaAs lasers.

Research work on various MIS transmission lines is well documented. Useful slow-wave propagation with low loss is always exhibited in recently proposed lower frequency ranges (several GHz). The letter is concerned with the essential properties of the micrometre-size coplanar MIS lines. A new loss-reducing monolithic MIS circuit is proposed with reference to physical considerations to ensure a low-cost mechanism.

Research into a novel class of distributed amplifiers which have a high isolation bandstop response in the reverse gain direction is described. These devices may be used as duplexer/circulator or bidirectional amplifier elements which, for many applications, can perform the function of ferrite isolator and circulator elements. The paper details the design of such an amplifier, working in the S-band, and gives measured test data.

The phase characteristics of 3 × 3 fibre couplers are investigated with a self-homodyne experiment at 1.3 and 1.5 μm. A 2 × 2 fibre coupler, a fibre delay line and the 3 × 3 fibre coupler under test form a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The measurement results are compared with values from S-matrix theory for lossy couplers.

A 565 Mbit/s optical PSK transmission system incorporating automatic endless polarisation control is reported. A receiver sensitivity of −49.8dBm was achieved, and the randomly varying polarisation state of the received signal was tracked with no observed degradation in system performance.

An undoped AlInAs/GaInAs heterostructure was grown by MOCVD and a W/WSi gate self-aligned HIFET (heterointerface FET) structure was made by ion implantation and rapid thermal annealing. The HIFET, 5μm in gate length, was of an enhancement-type with a threshold voltage of about 0 V and with a transconductance of 280mS/mm at room temperature. This result confirms the very high potential of this device for direct coupled FET logic (DCFL).

A new pipeline D/A convertor configuration is presented. This structure can be used as a module in a pipeline A/D convertor. The advantage of this D/A structure is that the accuracy is not influenced by any stray capacitor such as bottom plates or drain/source junction capacitors. As a result video frequency operation can be obtained with this structure.

A variation of the 5B6B line code is proposed which allows the insertion of an ancillary channel with a capacity of about 0.6% of primary channel capacity. It does not deteriorate line code properties nor primary channel performance. A code list is proposed as well as basic hardware. The properties of the ancillary channel are discussed and a possible design for the insertion of multiplexed data and ΔM voice signals is outlined.

An impedance transforming balun feeder system has been devised for low-gain antennas such as quadrifilar helices and spirals, consisting of four coaxial cables and a microstrip circuit. A hot electron transistor (HET) which has a strained GaInAs base and a graded AlGaAs collector barrier was grown on a GaAs substrate by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition. In this device, the difference in energy levels between the L-band minima of the base and the top of the collector barrier is wider than that in GaAs-base HETs, which results in a common emitter current gain β (collector current/base current) as high as 30.

The shape of corrugations for a DFB-LD is evaluated using ellipsometry. This technique provides a nondestructive method of evaluating corrugation shape. The corrugation on the surface of an InP substrate is assumed to be a thin film. The thickness and refractive index of this virtual thin film, measured by ellipsometry, provide information on corrugation depth and shape, respectively. With this method, it is possible to distinguish corrugations which have the same diffraction efficiency but different shapes.

Tapered couplers have been fabricated in GaAs/GaAlAs single-mode rib waveguides. A new etching technique has been used to fabricate transitions of 1μm over lengths of approximately 160 to 300 μm. Losses for the TE and TM fundamental modes have been measured at a wavelength of 1.3μm.

High-quality optical fibre polarisers based upon surface plasmon wave generation in a thin metal overlay have been reported recently. The letter presents experimental results using high birefringence fibre which indicate two forms of polarising action, dependent on the parameters of the device, allowing selection of the polarisation transmitted.

A new CMOS implementation for a linearised floating resistance is presented, where the resistor value depends only on the β of a matched set of nMOS transistors, and on a bias current IB; it is independent of the threshold voltage VT. Simulated worst-case linearity for a unity-gain amplifier is around 1% for a ±2 V output swing.

Compact, fibre-coupled Faraday optical isolators have been assembled. Isolators with both conventional and polarisation maintaining monomode fibre tails have been fully characterised in insertion loss, return loss and isolation ratio over the wavelength range 1480–1560nm.

The radius of the ground plane of coaxial probes commonly used for the in vivo determination of the dielectric properties of biological tissues is not necessarily large enough to assure its effect is negligible. A new design based on ray theory is presented for a phase corrected horn antenna which is shorter than one with a hyperbolic secant refractive index profile. A dielectric load is essential for realistic implementation. With load permittivity decreasing linearly towards the aperture, a smooth flared profile can be obtained. The antenna's compactness makes it useful for marine applications.

Frequency doubling of 1.319μm radiation by an optically-written χ(2) grating in a single-mode optical fibre is reported. A peak power of 25mW at 659nm was generated in 13cm of fibre. Phase matching is achieved by periodic modulation of the nonlinear susceptibility. Third harmonic generation of ultraviolet radiation is shown to be responsible for the creation of defect centres.

We observed a clear excitonic absorption effect at room temperature in MBE-grown Ga1−xInxAS/GaAs strained layer multiple quantum well structures, and fabricated optical pin modulators on the same structures. A change of 27% in the transmission, corresponding to a change in the absorption coefficient of 2260cm−1, with 6 V reverse bias voltage and at 9710 Å wavelength, was measured. We also operated the modulator as a self-electro-optic effect device, resulting in a nonlinear optical input/output characteristic.

To investigate the mechanisms involved in ferromagnetic metallic glasses, we have performed heavy-ion irradiation, during which the changes in magnetic properties have been studied in situ as a function of ion dose. The object of this paper is to describe the experimental set-up to record in situB(H) loops and initial permeability μi, of Metglas 2705 MN toroids.
