The letter presents the analysis of the effectiveness of compact testing of a microcomputer address bus with the assumed fault model SA1 and SA0, assuming that the testing schemes use a linear feedback shift register LFSR with a prime characteristic polynomial p(x) of degree n≥2.

Worst-month attenuation and XPD data are presented from a three year measurement program at Blacksburg, Virginia USA using the SIRIO 11.6 GHz beacon. The ratio of worst month to annual percentage occurrence levels (Q) for the attenuation and XPD data agree closely with each other. They also show excellent agreement to the CCIR model. Comparisons to previously reported experimental results are also given.

A ten-port planar star coupler has been developed, utilising multimode waveguides easily formed in a glass substrate by evaporated silver ion diffusion. The waveguides have circular cross-sections with graded-index profile, which matches well to graded-index multimode fibres. Insertion loss of 6 dB and the loss variation of 0.8 dB were attaied.

One method of network design is to adjust the element values until the coefficients of some network function are correct. It has recently been found that, when designing conventional ladder filters this way, the Jacobian in the Newton scheme became singular. The conditions for this are described and proved.

This letter presents some results on dual-channel Doppler spectral analysis of radar signals received by two circularly and orthogonally polarised radar channels. These results were produced from an analysis of experimental data obtained, in the presence of both aircraft target and clutter, by an S-band ATC radar suitably modified for dual polarisation reception. The results illustrate that dual channel processing can improve the target resolution with respect to the single-channel processing, when using maximum entropy spectral estimation methods.

Nonlinear distortion and frequency response for light-emitting diodes in analogue video transmission are greatly improved by using a wideband optoelectronic feedback loop employing monolithically integrated PIN photodiodes. Large monitoring efficiency of more than 2% makes it easy to realise this wideband and high-gain feedback loop.

Planar-structure InP/InGaAsP/InGaAs avalanche photo-diodes have been realised by using a VPE-growth technique and a Be+ implanted guard ring. Sensitivity measurement has been performed at 1.3 μm and 1.8 Gbit/s. The minimum average received level required for 10−9 BER was −31.3 dBm, which was 1.2 dB better than the value for the Ge-APD.

Planar structure InGaAs/InP PIN photodiodes having low dark current and low junction capacitance characteristics were reproducibly fabricated by using VPE wafers. Bias/temperature life testings for the diodes showed that there were no significant degradations after 5500 h aging at 250°C and 10 V reverse bias by adopting the Ti/Pt and Ti/Au metals for the p-side contact.

It is shown that the gain obtainable by coherent amplification using two-wave mixing in BSO crystals is limited by nonlinear effects. A model based on a generalisation of existing theories is presented, giving the dependence of gain coefficient on input beam ratio and leading to good agreement with experimental results.

An antenna consisting of a resonant dielectric hemisphere on top of a ground plane is investigated. Calculations of the internal and external fields are made with emphasis on the lowest-order mode that results in efficient radiation in the direction perpendicular to the ground plane. Measured input impedance data are also presented for a practical radiator.

We present a theoretical calculation which shows that optical solitary waves can propagate in an optical fibre in the femiosecond regime. The optical fibre which can support such a wave must exhibit negative third-order dispersion (β‴0<0) and must be used close to an appropriate ‘operating’ point (6β″/ω0β‴≃1). Use of these waves will further increase the bandwidth of optical fibre communication systems.

A robust pole assignment by linear state feedback is achieved in state-space representation by selecting a feedback which minimises the conditioning of the assigned eigenvalues of the closed-loop system. It is shown here that when this conditioning is minimised, a lower bound on the stability margin in the frequency domain is maximised.

One possible origin of the loss increase phenomenon with heat treatment at 200°C (H2 evolution from the coating material) has been investigated, using optical fibre coated with silicone resin containing the Si—D group. Although OH absorption at 1.4 μm increases with 200°C heat treatment, no OD peak is observed. It is suggested that silicone resin containing no Si—H and Si—CH2—CH2—Si groups is appropriate as a coating material as no H2 evolution is present.

A new switched-capacitor delay circuit which uses only a single amplifier and is insensitive to capacitor mismatch and stray capacitance is proposed. The insensitivity to capacitor mismatch permits the use of very small-valued capacitors so that the chip area can be reduced by device scaling as the feature sizes are reduced due to improvements in technology. Tapped analogue delay lines using such delay elements would be ideal for realising programmable and adaptive filters and equalisers in analogue LSI.

The use of a monomode optical fibre sensing element in the measurement of flow velocities by an interferometric technique is described, in which the operating principle is the flow induced oscillation of the fibre caused by vortex shedding. The system has been demonstrated to show a linear response with water flows in the Reynolds number range 100–3500.

A new technique is described in which stray-insensitive SC lowpass ladder filters of the LDI type are designed without the need for network synthesis. These filters exactly simulate the response of a unit element cascade prototype filter and may be designed with a usable frequency range up to one half the sampling frequency. This design procedure requires no more than simple hand calculation.

McCanny and McWhirter describe a method for enhancing the yield of a bit-level systolic array chip. A limitation of their approach is that all the configuration circuitry must work. We have examined alternative approaches which tolerate some defects in this circuitry and find one scheme in particular which turns out to be much more effective.

A regenerator for fibre optic systems which operates at 2 Gbit/s has been demonstrated using commercially available silicon bipolar integrated circuits. A parallel processing technique with following interleaver is used to achieve the required decision gate function. The regenerator has an ≃2 mV front end sensitivity for a<1 in 109 BER with a 215−1 PRBS.

In the letter a novel programmable wave-SC filter structure is presented which is suitable for implementation of a LPC vocoder including transmission zeros. Owing to distributed arithmetic five basic cells and two new slightly modified cells, which correspond to the nasal branch, are required for the entire SC vocoder. Each cell contains one programmable capacitor array and the capacitive loading of all op-amps is constant. The latter essentially simplifies the op-amp design and allows the use of low-power dynamic amplifiers. The presented structure employs only fully stray-insensitive SC-amphfier and integrator circuits and offers a low sensitivity to coefficient quantisation.
