Typical crosspolar levels of −33 dB in the reflection band and slightly lower levels in transmission were recorded for the concentric ring array in the 45° planes of the feed/array combination. The Jerusalem cross array gave higher levels in transmission. The band centre frequency ratios were 1.4 and 1.6.

An investigation is reported into the electrical properties of palladium/silicon oxide/n-type silicon Schottky-barrier-type structures. On exposure to hydrogen a large increase in the DLTS signal is observed. This is thought to be associated with the production of electron trapping centres. Analysis reveals the presence of two traps, both located near the silicon surface.

The letter describes a novel optical tap array by using a two-dimensional array of planar microlenses. The present device is used to monitor a part of light which is transmitted through optical fibres. Planar microlenses to focus the light have been monolithically fabricated by the use of the electromigration technique; the focal length is 3 mm and NA is 0.15. The coupling efficiency of the initial device was 52% for coupling multimode graded-index fibres.

A new technique for mixing optical waves to generate microwave-frequency signals using an injection laser diode and a fibre-optic interferometer is reported. A beat signal is produced by interfering light from the laser with light from the same laser emitted earlier at a different frequency. The interferometer consists of an evanescent-field fibre coupler joined to a length of single-mode optical fibre. The laser is tuned by pulsed or bipolar current waveforms superimposed on a DC bias current. Feedback from an external cavity stabilises the laser frequency and reduces its linewidth. Efficient mixing at difference frequencies from 250 MHz to 2 GHz is obtained, with spectral widths of less than 1% of the centre frequency.

In the letter, the feasibility of applying the equivalent-step-index parameters to estimate the single-mode waveguide dispersion of various radially inhomogeneous profiles is studied. The results are compared to the actual values obtained by numerical techniques and the errors estimated. The equivalent-step approach seems to be accurate only for cases where the profiles do not deviate severely from the step-index profile.

Single-mode and multimode optical fibre splice losses averaging 0.10 dB and 0.04 dB, respectively, have been achieved using a moulded elastomeric tube. Multimode fibre splices were also characterised at various source launch conditions, and no sensitivity to different modal distributions was found.

In this letter it is shown that sampling rate conversion—either interpolation or decimation—of multidimensional digital signals can be realised merely by the use of one-dimensional filter design techniques. It is then proved that multidimensional rate conversion can be performed on a dimension-by-dimension basis, leading to the establishment of its commutative and associative properties.

GaP diodes were fabricated by Mg+ implantation and controlled atmosphere annealing. At room temperature, these diodes emit green light under forward bias, with an ideality factor of 2.0. Reverse breakdown voltages are 180 V, with a measured reverse leakage current density of 4.8 × 10−9 A/cm2 at a bias of −3 V. The diodes retain good electrical characteristics at 400°C.

The polarisation-holding ability of a 1 km length of high-birefringence fibre is reported. The fibre birefringence increases linearly with frequency and the polarisation-holding parameter h is independent of frequency with a value of 5.5 × 10−6 m−1, indicating average polarisation-holding to −22 dB.

Optical fibres coated with piezoelectric polymers are shown to be sensitive conductorless detectors of electric fields. The phase shift of a fibre coated with a polymer containing PVF2 was found to be 2.3 × 10−5 radians per V/m of electric field per metre of fibre.

The first trial on the fabrication of completely synthesised VAD single-mode fibre is reported. Successful formation of a large deposited cladding-to-core diameter ratio of 10 leads to redundancy of silica jacketing tubes.

A large preform for 220 km of fibre was fabricated with the vapour-phase axial deposition (VAD) method. The deposition rate for the core was 1.7 g/min. Optical fibre drawn from a part of the preform had optical attenuation of 0.58 dB/km and bandwidth 500 MHz km0.9 at a wavelength of 1.3 μm.

The letter deals with radiation conductance of an interdigital transducer (IDT) for surface skimming bulk waves (SSBWs) on 41°- and 64°-rotated Y-cuts of LiNbO3. The radiation conductance was estimated theoretically by two methods and was compared with experimental results. The frequency response of SSBW IDTs on these cuts of LiNbO3 is similar to that of a conventional surface acoustic wave transducer, but markedly different from the response obtained when launching SSBWs from an IDT on rotated Y-cuts of quartz.

The letter deals with a new method of calculation of direct coupling between two dielectric resonators. This method could be used for the design of microwave integrated filters. Comparison between calculated and measured values of this coupling shows good agreement.

A new way of converting light energy into electric power is presented. A capacitor is charged periodically under influence of the chopped light flux. Electric energy stored in the capacitor can be increased by the parametric effect, i.e. the reduction of the capacitance value. The energy conversion process is analysed. The possible applications and limitations of this device are indicated and discussed.

There are several applications of highly coherent semiconductor lasers, especially in coherent optical-fibre communications systems and optical-fibre sensors. Optical phase noise is extremely important in these applications. Here we report preliminary results from a simple technique whereby phase noise in semiconductor lasers may be reduced. Initial results demonstrate a phase-noise reduction of typically 20 dB. Developments of the technique should permit reduction towards the shot noise limit.

Corrugated metal surfaces show the property of rotatory polarisation. Orientation of the corrugations with plane of polarisation of incident radiation determines the extent of the tilt. The rotatory polarisation is additive when two corrugated reflecting surfaces are successively employed.

Introduction of monolithic integrated circuit technology to high bit rate optical repeater is studied. Monolithic integrated amplifiers are realised for a 400 Mbit/s optical repeater such as a preamplifier, AGC amplifier and postamplifier, using advanced silicon bipolar process technology. An equalising amplifier with four monolithic amplifiers got 66 dB maximum gain, 35 dB variable gain and 350 MHz band-width with 550 mW power consumption.

The inverse scattering problem for perfectly conducting convex bodies has been solved in the multistatic case. By eliminating depolarisation effects from the far-field data a function Ac(up, ζ) can be determined that well approximates the cross-sectional area function of the body. So the reconstruction problem is reduced to a Radon problem.

Geodesic lenses are printed into glass substrates by using pressurised nitrogen and precisely machined preforms made of synthetic graphite. Multimode film waveguides of about 50 μm depth are fabricated by a field-assisted silver ion exchange. The geometrical tolerances, the spot size and the losses are measured.

A monolithic X-band GaAs FET oscillator has been developed. Passive circuit components are lumped capacitors and inductors on semi-insulating GaAs; the chip size is 1.2 × 1.4 mm2. Stabilised with a Ba2Ti9O20 dielectric resonator, the oscillator delivers more than 30 mW output power at 10.8 GHz with a maximum chip efficiency of 20%. The frequency drift is better than 1 × 10−6/K from −20°C to 80°C.

The letter presents a routine for the experimental characterisation of coaxial-to-microstrip transitions in terms of S-parameters which are normalised with respect to two different impedances. This enables the de-embedding of devices in terms of S-parameters normalised to an impedance which is more convenient than 50 Ω.
