The letter suggests a simple method for improving the quality of linear prediction vocoder speech with noisy input. The improvement has been substantiated by the results of an experiment using the absolute isopreference method for speech quality testing.

Heterojunction switching photodiodes (InGaAs/InP) were used to construct a 3×3 matrix switch. Isolation and cross-talk losses were better than 63 dB over a frequency range of 10 Hz to 400 MHz and 400 Mbit/s digital signals were switched with switching times shorter than 30 ns.

A simple method is presented for obtaining approximate expressions for the power reflection and transmission coefficients of surface waves scattered by a step discontinuity in a dielectric slab waveguide. The approximation is compared with Rozzi's exact solution. Agreement is quite good for a wide range of the relevant parameters.

A new method to measure polarisation mode dispersion is described, in which the accuracy is more than 0.1 ps. 0.17 ps polarisation mode dispersion was obtained for about 1 km length of fibre. The result is compared with the retardation obtained for a short length of the fibre.

It is shown that observation of elliptical oscillation at frequencies ∼24 GHz in a molecular beam maser operated with a disk resonator is facilitated by the display of the polarisation ellipse on an oscilloscope. The letter describes a single stage operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) with cascoded output transistors, designed for micropower switched-capacitor filters. The device features high voltage gain (>90 dB) under capacitive load, large output swing, very low power consumption (5 μW at 3 V supply voltage for 100 kHz bandwidth with 10 pF load) and reduced circuit area (<0.1 mm2).

The effective medium temperature necessary for the conversion of microwave thermal emission to slant-path attenuation has been calculated for 11.8 GHz for a homogeneous slab of rain. The first results from calculations on a cylindrical model of rain at 11.8 GHz are also presented. The influence of ground reflectivity coefficient is investigated.

The power flow angle of surface acoustic waves in quartz not on a crystalline axis of symmetry is shown to vary rapidly with temperature. Experimental results and theoretical calculations are presented demonstrating the dependence of the acoustic power flow angle on a doubly rotated cut of quartz.

Bistable operation in InP/InGaAsP/InP DH lasers with a periodic excitation stripe geometry is reported. Bistability is observed within a current range of about 10% of the threshold current for maximum value. The range strongly depends on the stripe geometry and heat sink temperature, and they are controllable.

Very high speed GaAs frequency dividers with a maximum operating frequency of 10 GHz are proposed. The dividers are based on a two-phase dynamic logic concept. Breadboard and simulation results are presented and discussed.

The electron Hall mobility has been calculated in the relaxation time approximation as a function of carrier concentration in n-type Ga0.47In0.53As. Comparison with measured mobilities shows excellent agreement at room temperature, but significant disagreement at 77 K. It is argued that the discrepancy between calculation and experiment is the manifestation of an alloy scattering effect with a temperature variation quite different from the T−½ dependence derived by Brooks.

The effective canting angle of distorted raindrops along an earth-space propagation path has been obtained from a one-year phase amplitude measurement of two orthogonal components of satellite signals. It is shown that the distribution of canting angles is centred around the horizontal orientation, with the standard deviation of about 11°.

A new general structure for strays-insensitive switched capacitor biquadratic cells based on an altered set of input/output conditions is proposed. Several transformations which reduce the size or number of capacitors or create a filter characteristic independent of capacitor ratios are presented. Finally, a family of biquads which realise all inverting and noninverting bilinear transformed functions for leapfrog and follow-the-leader feedback filters are derived from the general structure.

By considering a linear target consisting of a finite number of isotropic scatterers, we can determine these scatterers from a partial knowledge of the RCS diagram. In the letter we estimate the minimum interval of viewing aspects required for a given wavelength.

An exact solution is presented to the problem of current spreading in the resistive layer of stripe geometry DH lasers.
