45 km of single-mode fibre of differing detailed design has been loose-tube packaged under identical conditions. The spectral loss between 1.1 and 1.75 μm was measured before and after packaging. The incremental loss thus deduced, and related to equivalent core size and Δn, provided information about fibre design for safe packaging.

Loss minima in two fluoride glass and chalcogenide glass fibres were calculated. The intrinsic losses are predicted to be 1 × 10−3 dB/km at 3.4 μm for BaF2-GdF3-ZrF4 glass fibre, 1 × 10−2 dB/km at 2.7 μm for BaF2-CaF2-YF3-AlF3 glass fibre and 1 × 10−2 dB/km at 4.5 μm for GeS3 glass fibre.

Window units constructed from multiple dielectric plates offer means for combating bird damage to antenna feed horns on microwave radio systems. The need for such devices on Australian systems is increasing as routes are extended into the drier regions of the country. Measurements show that the antenna electrical characteristics are not appreciably altered by the new window units.

Sum-frequency light in optical fibres, pumped by a Q-switched laser, was investigated. The 0.54 μm sum-frequency light, generated from a combination of a 1.064 μm pump light and the 1.12 μm first Stokes light, is observed above 80 W input power and found to increase with the square of the input power.

A novel InGaAsP/InP buried heterostructure (BH) laser was fabricated on a p-InP substrate. This laser can provide a peak pulse output of 0.8 W per facet with a stable lateral transverse mode oscillation and enables the fault location measurement of a single mode fibre cable over 20 km.

An optical time domain reflectometer was newly constructed by using a high power Nd:YAG laser operating at a wavelength of 1.32 μm and a TeO2 acousto-optical light deflector. As a result, the maximum detectable fault location length of 34 km for single-mode fibre and that of 60 km for multimode graded-index fibre were successfully attained.

Microstrip parameters in layered dielectric media are empirically investigated with the intention to maximise dispersion. Experimental results show that dispersion increases appreciably over wide frequency bands when using this structure. Physical parameters which increase dispersion are the thickness of the dielectric layers, the ratio of the maximum and the minimum dielectric constants and the maximum dielectric constant of the material used.

In ladder-simulation switched-capacitor filters, offset voltages of the op-amps can cause the output simulating inductor currents to build up if the LC prototype contains an inductor loop. This problem is eliminated by a novel technique where the sum of inductor currents flowing into each node is simulated by one op-amp output.

A new GaInAsP/InP injection laser was fabricated on semi-insulating substrates. The structure utilises a single LPE growth process on a grooved substrate to form an index guided device. Current confinement was obtained by the semi-insulating InP surrounding the GaInAsP active layer. Threshold current as low as 28 mA with 250 μm cavity length was obtained. The light/current characteristic was linear up to five times Ith. A single longitudinal mode at 1.20 μm up to 1.3 Ith was observed.

Novel 10-fibre connectors have been developed based on a magnetic self-aligning mechanism. The magnetic-alloy-clad fibres for the connector are attracted into V-grooves by a permanent magnet. The average connection loss is 0.4 dB with index matching. The loss for each connection point remains constant within a deviation of 0.005 dB, the measurement accuracy, for disengagement/re-engagement cycles with the connector.

This letter presents a novel approach to the realisation of monolithic pseudobandpass filters using NMOS technology. The method is based on the use of sampled analogue signals and is related to the wave digital filter in its design techniques. Results are presented for a prototype pseudobandpass filter which uses the periodicity of a cascaded transmission line microwave filter.

Properties of an optical cable under frozen water in a conduit were examined. Large optical loss increase occurred due to freezing pressure. A simple and economical method for inserting specially designed PE pipes in a conduit was found to have clear effect in preventing loss increase.

The implementation of ultrabroadband low-noise GaAs FET amplifiers operating up to 20 GHz is shown to be possible with the use of a low-parasitic high-gm device, which can only be implemented using monolithic circuit techniques. An example of a 0.1 to 6 GHz hybrid low-noise amplifier to illustrate the circuit technique is described.

A new primary coating method for optical fibres has been developed. A locally heated and softened thermoplastic tube, in which the fibre is passing through, is drawn to form a coating layer on the fibre. This method has large advantages in forming a precisely concentric coating layer and fabricating a strong fibre.

A new fast even discrete sine transform with offset (FEDSTo) has been developed and implemented for use in picture processing. This FEDSTo is faster than FDCTs for many block sizes and produces pictures that are subjectively much better than those of other available fast discrete transforms when only one-dimensional blocks are used and low sequency coefficients are retained for transmission.

The letter reports two circuits simulating ideal floating inductances and a capacitor floatation scheme using grounded copacitors. Both the inductances and capacitors are tunable through a single resistance and it has been shown that it is possible to simulate these realisations with unmatched passive components.

We report for the first time experimental evaluation of the material dispersion in a fluoride glass. Very interesting features are observed as the wavelength of zero material dispersion is around 1.7 μm and the disperison is about only 45 ps/nm × km at a 4 μm wavelength.

In previous work, the authors obtained median tensile strengths for lightguide fusion splices of ~2.5 GPa by avoiding mechanical damage to the fibre surface. In the present work, values of ~4 GPa have been obtained by using a chlorine-hydrogen torch for splicing. This results in the removal or deactivation of surface hydroxyl groups, thereby reducing corrosion during splicing.

The theoretical investigations on the group delay in single mode fibres have been studied by considering the photoelastic effect in addition to the electron polarisability effect on the refractive index of optical fibres. It is found that, although the electron polarisability effect dominates in unjacketed fibre, the photoelastic effect becomes greater with increasing thickness of the jacketing layer.

To reduce OH-ion content in MCVD preforms a method, based on a thermal-activated deuterium-hydrogen isotope exchange, has been developed. Reaction has been applied on the internal walls of silica substrate tubes to produce a buffering layer against hydrogen diffusion. If a SAW or SSBW device is operated above its normal frequency the interdigital transducers usually launch and receive a complex spectrum of plate modes. By contrast we show here that if the substrate orientation and geometry are chosen correctly it is possible to design a ‘clean’ plate mode response at a frequency up to at least six times that of the corresponding SAW device.

Results from computer simulation of a GaAs Schottky-barrier coupled Schottky-barrier gate FET logic inverter of different values of Vp are reported. It is shown that the inverter of gate dimensions 1 × 10 μm−2, Vp = −1 V, and fan-out of one has tpd = 17 ps and P = 1 mW, and that still lower power consumption is possible with smaller |Vp|. Problems associated with small |Vp| are also discussed.

The results obtained from the numerical simulation of P+NN+ and N+PP+ trapatt diodes show a considerable difference between processes of dynamic minority-carrier storage in these structures. The reasons for this difference are discussed. It is shown that the given analysis will be useful in the explanation of the experimentally observed superiority of N+PP+-type diodes.
