Experiments have shown that thick-film strain gauges have gauge factors in excess of 7. The nominal resistance values of the gauges were between 300 and 700 Ω.

Results are given on precision measurements of the relative dielectric constant of high-purity semi-insulating gallium arsenide. Using this and other data, it is concluded that the value is within about 0.5% of 12.9, and does not vary significantly between zero frequency and at least 70 GHz.

The letter presents the results of an initial study performed in the development of millimetre-wave dielectric waveguide integrated circuits using novel thick-film printing techniques. The measurements of the propagation characteristics of sample lines at 60 GHz demonstrate the feasibility of such an approach and examples of printed components indicate its potential in low-cost high-volume applications.

A simple improvement of the t.l.m. method is proposed. The choice of a Hanning window instead of the rectangular one which is usually preferred allows a drastic reduction of the number of iterations required to obtain a fair response.

Practical 4-port and 8-port kaleidoscope micro-optic star couplers for optical-fibre data links have been developed, with the advantages of low insertion losses well balanced among the ports, high reliability, easy fabrication and small size. This coupler utilises image formation by multireflection at the side planes of a cross-sectionally wedge-shaped small rod lens, and is therefore called a kaleidoscope micro-optic star coupler.

PVF2 thin-film transducers have been incorporated in a 8 MHz s.a.w. delay line. The flexibility of the transducer material will allow its use on curved as well as plane surfaces. Losses at frequencies typical in n.d.t. applications are in principle relatively low; it is for such tasks that the use of PVF2 s.a.w. transducers is seen as particularly appropriate.

Experimental data on the performance characteristics of a reactance-controlled waveguide-fed short-backfire array is described. The results indicate that this simple, compact structure, which electronically steers the beam over a limited angular region, may be useful for ship and airborne antennas.

Epitaxial Ge/GaAs low-barrier-height Ti-Mo-Au Schottkybarrier diodes exhibit a noise figure of 6.5 dB at 36 GHz and at 0.75 mW of local oscillator (l.o.) power. These diodes represent significant improvement over standard GaAs-Ti diodes at low power levels.

The letter describes the experimental performance of a 1×2 optical switch using a new type of pentagonal prism. The proposed pentagonal prism is a glass block consisting of a pentagonal pole with two roof prisms on each side. The insertion loss and repeatability were estimated to be less than 0.76 dB and 0.15 dB without reflection losses, respectively.

Phase-modulated data transmission in multimode optical fibres is complicated by signal fades due to variations in intermodal phase. The letter describes a very simple technique to recover the data without the use of complex diversity receivers. The method involves varying the relative modal phases at a rate sufficient to ensure at least one signal maximum during each bit period. Thus the input signal is sampled and may be recovered by lowpass filtering. Experimental results demonstrate that the error rate for a single-channel digital receiver can be reduced by several orders of magnitude using this technique.

A technique is presented for the fabrication of single-mode fibre optic directional couplers. The effect of finite sample width on the dispersion and delay characteristics of magnetostatic bulk waves in a multilayered structure consisting of a y.i.g. sandwiched between grounded dielectric layers is investigated. It is seen that the cutoff frequency of bulk waves is different for different modes. The effect of finite sample width is significant in the low-wave-number region only when one of the dielectrics is ungrounded.

An l.m.s. algorithm is described which sequentially adjusts the radius and angle co-ordinates of the zeros of a filter so as to minimise the output power. A cascade of second-order sections is used, with the zeros restricted to complex conjugate positions. The performance is compared with that of a ladder structure.
