A technique for weighting surface acoustic wave (s.a.w.) device reflectors which combines withdrawal weighting and segmented lines is described. This scheme has the advantage of lower photolithographic mask costs through the partial use of withdrawal weighting, and the advantage of closely approximating the desired weighting function by partial use of segmented (dotted) lines. Effectiveness of this combined weighting technique is demonstrated by its use in sidelobe suppression in two-port s.a.w. resonators; however, combined-type weighted reflectors can be used to advantage in all types of filters utilising reflective arrays.

Properties of deep level defects in heteroepitaxially grown ZnSe have been investigated using transient capacitance spectroscopy. A total of five electron traps were observed with activation energies of 0.33, 0.35, 0.42, 0.71 and 0.86 eV in Au/ZnSe Schottky diodes. Trap concentrations ranged from 1012 to 1014 cm−3.

The letter presents a counterexample to the conjecture of Jury that the stabilisation technique of Shanks based on the least-square inverse of the denominator polynomial of a filter function may be valid if the original polynomial and the least-square inverse are of the same degree; this disproves the Jury conjecture in general.

A signal processing technique is presented in which the coefficients of the transfer function depend only on timing, and are independent of element values or even element value ratios. Filters implemented using this technique are fully programmable, can be made with only analogue gates and delay elements, and are suitable for integration using m.o.s. technology.

The letter deals with a quite simple apparatus capable of bandwidth and insertion loss measurements of installed optical links. The performance is such that the measurement is possible whatever the distance between two regenerators.

The harmonic content of a commercial c.w. 20 mW 100 GHz IMPATT oscillator operating at ambient temperature has been determined at 200 and 300 GHz using free space techniques. The highest power levels observed at these frequencies were 16.6 and 37.5 dB below the fundamental, respectively, corresponding to power levels of 0.5 mW at 200 GHz and 4.5 μW at 300 GHz at the oscillator.

By an appropriate transformation of variables and modelling of capacitors, opamps and sources, the analysis of switched-capacitor networks is transformed into the analysis of linear networks, which can then be performed by any of the known standard analysis programs.

The transmission loss of v.a.d. fibres made from various grade raw materials has been studied. It has been found that low loss spectra are obtained in v.a.d. fibre fabricated from the raw material of low grade silicon tetrachloride (99.17%). The transmission loss of the fibre is 0.60 dB/km at 1.55 μm.

A novel ultrasonic probe for the measurement of field distributions in water is described. In an arrangement using a metal cone tip as the antenna and an acoustic lens with conventional large diameter transducer as the detector, a spatial resolution of λ/4 was achieved. Experimental results for a 4 MHz design are presented.

Asymptotic vector wave formulas for calculating the cutoff frequencies in optical fibres with graded-index core and uniform cladding are derived. Numerical examples are given in comparison with the scalar wave solutions, in order to show that the mode degeneracy present in the regime of scalar wave approximations is removed and the cutoff values in degenerate states split slightly.

Simultaneous measurements with a 16.5 GHz polarisation diversity radar and the 28.56 GHz Comstar beacon are reported. Radar measurements of the differential propagation constant during a severe depolarisation event established that the depolarisation was due primarily to lossless scatterers above the melting layer, with little contribution from rain or the melting layer. Differential phase shifts as high as 1.7°/km at 16.5 GHz, corresponding to 2.9°/km at 28.56 GHz, were observed. Good agreement between radar derived and beacon measurements of differential phase shift was obtained.

A heat sink metallisation system for use with indium soldering of semiconductor lasers is presented. The system, consisting of the metals InPtNiCu, is found to be temperature stable during a 1700 h storage test in 120°C. S.I.M.S. inspection detects no deterioration of the indium top layer. Ni is found to be an effective barrier for the Cu atoms in the heat sink and Pt provides good wetting of the indium solder, making the system suitable for large scale bonding procedures.

A circuit for retiming a 1.12 Gbit/s n.r.z. signal in an optical transmission system is described. Retiming in the repeater is accomplished by sampling the n.r.z. signal with a 1.12 GHz clock signal. The resulting r.z. signals are fed to a Schmitt trigger which acts as an RS flip-flop, where the r.z. signals are converted back to n.r.z. signals.

The resonant frequency, bandwidth, efficiency and resonant length of a rectangular microstrip resonator on a ferrimagnetic substrate are derived theoretically and are computed for a typical ferrite substrate. A proposed a.c. digital wattmeter is described. It combines the principles of the double dual-slope multiplying analogue-digital convertor and of the quarter squares multiplier with those of the sampling digital wattmeter to provide an alternative wattmeter system where multiplication, digitising, averaging, and integration may be performed using relatively few components. The new system offers some possible advantages over a previous successful double dual-slope wattmeter.

Planar GaAs j.f.e.t.s in the normally-off mode were fabricated by direct selective ion implantation into a semi-insulating Cr-doped substrate for n-type active regions and selective Zn diffusion for p-type gate areas. The p-n junction gate, typically 2 μm in length and 20 μm in width, was formed without appreciable anomalous lateral diffusion. A 15-stage ring oscillator formed with resistor-f.e.t. logic gates exhibited a propagation delay time of 73 ps per stage with a power-delay product of 320 fJ. The minimum power-delay product was 5.6 fJ with delay time of 163 ps.

N-point processing, where many samples are taken from a single optical fibre backscatter return, is shown to be an efficient means of implementing a two-point processor. This method is unaffected by source noise peculiar to single heterostructure lasers, which is shown to limit severely the performance of boxcar integrators.
