In a shielded cylindrical dielectric resonator a number of degenerate modes with identical natural frequencies can be found. These degenerate modes can be coupled together to form coupled circuits by perturbating the geometrical configuration of the structure. The letter presents both TE01p mode resonant frequency perturbation by a tuning screw and a two modes dielectric filter using two perpendicularly polarised HE111 modes of the resonator.

The letter presents an analysis for the bit error probability (b.e.p.) of a two-link binary coherent phase-shift-keying (c.p.s.k.) system corrupted by additive Gaussian noise and consisting of a direct phase regenerator (d.p.r.) followed by a coherent receiver. Equivalent signal/noise ratio (s.n.r.) degradations due to imperfections in a practical d.p.r. are evaluated at the 10−6 b.e.p. point.

Using optical approximation, we find that it is simpler to analyse the r.c.s. of a target in the Tcheby̅shev polynomial space than in the other currently used spaces. With this method we can immediately find the geometrical parameters of the target for certain simple structures.

Measurements are reported of the electrical characteristics and temperature dependence of threshold current of InGaAsP-InP d.h. lasers (λ = 1.3 μm). Analysis of the I dV/dI characteristics of these devices indicates that drift leakage of carriers from the active region is not responsible for the high temperature sensitivity of threshold in this material system.

A broadband parallel-wire meander line deflection circuit has been devised. It has relatively flat deflection characteristics in the range 4–17.5 GHz. An expression for boresight isolation as a function of the correlation diameter, the r.m.s. surface error and the polarisation efficiency of the antenna is given. Curves of isolation as a function of the r.m.s. surface error and the correlation diameter are given for polarisation efficiencies of 0.99 and 0.999 (i.e. for antennas with peak off-axis cross-polarisation of −25.3 dB and −35.4 dB, respectively).

Injection phase locking of an AlGaAs double heterostructure laser was studied with respect to visibility. The maximum value of visibility measured by interference experiment with the injecting wave was 0.87. Causes of the visibility degradation were attributed to the light from a heat sink plane and to spurious modes other than the locked central mode.

Recursive linear digital filters which operate without roundoff errors, known as cyclotomic filters, have been shown to be useful as tone generators and detectors applicable to pseudo-random noise generation. Touch Tone®, f.s.k. and broadband frequency detection. These filters are modelled by periodic linear recursions with integer feedback coefficients. In certain applications, such as tone detection, it is desirable to have considerable differentiation between the detected and the rejected frequency amplitudes. Other applications such as pseudorandom noise generation require a more uniform power distribution throughout the spectrum. It is shown that the number N(m) of distinct nonzero spectral amplitude levels for such a filter of period m is exactly N(m)=ϕ(m0)/2 when in m0>2, where m0 is the largest square-free divisor of m and ϕ(m0) is the number of positive integers less than and sharing no prime factor with in m0; N(m)=1 when m0≤2. In particular, a uniform power distribution is effected over the entire spectrum of resonating frequencies (i.e. N(m)=1) if and only if m=2a3b for some non-negative integers a and b.

A new type of T-coupler, a so-called asymmetric coupler, in which fibres having different core diameters are used has been realised. This technique can lead to a significant reduction in the input coupling losses between input terminals and transmission fibre. For a moderate number of terminals, the losses of a T-bus with asymmetric couplers are comparable to those of a star bus.

A relation between the modal power distribution and the near-field intensity is derived. Whereas the near-field intensity (averaged over all possible speckle patterns) is uniquely determined by the modal power distribution, it is impossible to derive a unique modal power distribution from a given near-field intensity. For special additional assumptions follow relations already known from literature.
