The Kalman-filter parameter estimator is extended to the case of estimation of the parameters of a linearised model of a nonlinear system. To illustrate the technique, an electric-arc-furnace electrode-controller model, whose parameters are known approximately a priori, is tuned by applying the extended Kalman filter to measurements of pseudorandom binary-sequency system-input disturbance and response.

A dual predetection diversity combiner based on the double-heterodyne principle has been constructed for use in the v.h.f. mobile-radio band. Tests using fading simulators have demonstrated its effectiveness as a combiner, and shown that it provides a substantial improvement in b.e.r. when used in an f.s.k. data receiver.

For measuring reproducibily the baseband frequency response of a graded-index fibre, a mode exciter utilising an ordinary step-index multimode fibre has been proposed. The input mode power distribution and the frequency response of the fibre with the exciter are altered very little for axis offset. Input mode distribution excited indicates that excitation of nearly all modes takes place.

Two new types of c.c.d. tapped delay lines are described. One has parallel channels separated by channel stops from input to output. The other has channel stop wedges partitioning charge packets down the device. High performance is achieved.

A low-loss high-sidelobe-rejection shallow bulk acoustic filter has been constructed. The delay line consisted of apodised and finger-withdrawal-weighted transducers as well as a metallic energy-trapping grating. Experimental results are given and discussed.

The addition of radial conducting strips to microstrip disc antenna elements alters the circuit and radiation behaviour. Frequency shift, pattern modification and dual-frequency operation can be obtained by proper selection of the strip parameters.

The optical loss change caused by hydraulic pressure in a multimode plastic-coated fibre with a buffer layer was examined. The relationship between loss change and fibre dimensions was found. A large-outer-diameter fibre exhibits a small change in the optical loss caused by hydraulic pressure.

Using a classical model, and adding two complementary propositions, it is possible to obtain a general method for calculating the fading distribution laws on line-of-sight links of indifferent lengths undergoing multipath propagation. In particular, it is shown that the conventional empirical d3.5 power law gives a rough approximation in a very limited domain, but is not a general law.

The best position for a feed for a paraboloid with an offset pattern is determined by deriving the exact form of the phase front in the receiving mode and approximating to a circle. Formulae are derived for obtaining the position of the centre of this circle and the extension to correcting lenses or subreflectors is indicated.

A 14.0–14.5 GHz 1 W amplifier using 0.5 μm gate length power GaAs f.e.t.s has been developed. The amplifier, consisting of a cascade of three single-ended stages, realises 13 dB small-signal gain, 1.1 W output-power saturation and 39 dBm third-order intermodulation intercept. The circuit design and the microwave performance of the amplifier are discussed.

A new s.a.w. time-inversion system is described. It requires fewer chirp-filter elements than those required with the common method of cascading two Fourier or Fresnel transformations. This new method is based on the fact that the Fourier transform of a linear f.m. signal whose envelope is modulated by a given time function has (approximately) the time-inverted function as its amplitude. Theoretical discussion and some experimental results are included.

A recently proposed third-order structure using current conveyors is shown to consist of a cascade of second and first-order stages, thereby simplifying design formulae and sensitivity calculations. For realisations utilising equal-valued capacitors, the design equations form an identical set to an array previously considered for controlled-source networks. Optimum solutions based on minimum resistor sum and spread are applicable by relaxing the unity current transfer factor of one convertor.
