A low-loss demountable connector with a precision-made ceramic capillary is presented for 1.3 μm single-mode fibres. The field-assembly connector can be assembled without adjusting fibre core alignment to the centre of a plug. By using a plastic thin film, an average connection loss of below 0.3 dB is obtained.

This letter presents a new type of circularly polarised micro-strip antenna. It is composed of half-wavelength strip conductors and slots arranged along both sides of a microstrip line. Circular polarisation can easily be obtained with this antenna whether the current distribution on the line is a travelling wave or a standing wave. The experimental verification is also presented.

A new mixed-integer linear programming objective function for optimising an f.i.r. linear-phase digital filter is presented. In comparison with the conventional objective function, the new one has the advantages of reducing the number of delays and/or the coefficient wordlength.

Computer simulations of overlength modes in transferred electron devices predict efficient second-harmonic-generator operation much less degraded by electron relaxation effects than for fundamental oscillators with the same output frequency.

Before barrier metal evaporation, silicon Schottky diodes were cleaned by argon-ion bombardment. Some device series were evaporated just after the ion cleaning, whereas others were annealed beforehand. The electrical characteristics of the different series were checked by means of standard I/V and C/V measurements. Whereas the ideality coefficient and the barrier height obtained from I/V characteristics showed nearly complete recovery after heat treatment for 1 h at 700°C, the barrier height from C/V measurements did not recover.

The spectral representation of a Boolean function is analysed with particular concern for the distribution of the information required in testing for the existence of certain fundamental types of symmetry. It is found that this distribution is not even, the high-order end of the spectrum being examined more frequently than the low-order end. This observation gives some basis for the view that the spectrum of a function may characterise the complexity of the function's realisation.

A monolithic c.c.d. filter for p.c.m. codec was fabricated employing both a minimum-phase design with a substantially reduced number of taps and almost perfect elimination of excess capacitances. Results, such as negligible degradation in frequency responses, considerable reduction of common-mode signal, low filter noise (−78 dBm) and wide dynamic range (84 dB) were successfully obtained.

A half-duplex optical link Libido (Liaison bidirectionnelle optique) has been realised using the optimised semiconductor optical transceiver Eros (Emitter-receiver for optical systems). The digital transmission has a bit rate of 10 Mb/s with a biphase code using a step-index plastic-clad silica fibre. The characteristics of the component and the link are presented.

Mixed carrier injection in a commercial n+-p germaniun a.p.d. causes the excess multiplication noise to be wavelength dependent, with averaged k-values of around unity. The quantum efficiency is 70% between 1.1 and 1.5 μm, and the unmultiplied bulk leakage current density is estimated to be 3.5×10−4 A cm−2

Channelled-substrate GaAs/GaAlAs injection lasers with very narrow current-confining stripe contacts are described. They have threshold currents less than half those previously reported for this type of device. The best devices had a room-temperature threshold current of only 12 mA pulsed and 14 mA c.w. The lasers also have very good high-temperature performance and c.w. operation has been obtained up to 160°C.

The possibility of using In0.18Ga0.82As p-n junctions as a low-bandgap (1.15 eV) solar cell has been investigated. With a lattice-matched p+ In0.6Ga0.4P window layer, internal collection efficiency close to 100% has been demonstrated.

Self-aligned aluminium-gate silicon-on sapphire (s.o.s.) m.o.s.f.e.t.s have been fabricated by applying laser-anneal technology from the back surface for activation of the ion-implanted channel layer. The threshold voltage and surface electron mobility were similar to the conventional silicon-gate m.o.s.f.e.t.s, but the low resistivity of gate and interconnection electrodes using aluminium is advantageous for high switching speed m.o.s. l.s.i.

A low-loss plastic optical fibre has been manufactured employing polystyrene as core material. The minimum transmission loss was 140 dB/km at 670 nm, and intrinsic material loss of polystyrene was estimated to be 105 dB/km.

A simple polarisation-independent optical circulator has been developed. The circulator consists of a 45°Y3Fe5O12 rotator and a quartz rotator and two polarising beam-splitting cubes. Measured insertion loss was about 1.3 dB at 1.32 μm wavelength. The circulator was connected to graded-index multimode fibres using rod lenses.

An adaptive algorithm is presented for the estimation of reflection coefficients of the lattice processor. Unlike currently available block processing algorithms, this does not require a priori storage of data, nor does it involve ad hoc choices of iteration step lengths which concern hill-climbing techniques.

Some results are presented on the convergence rate of lattice filters when adaptive algorithms are employed for estimating their reflection coefficients. It is shown that, unlike tapped-delay-line filters, adaptive lattices are not affected by ill-conditioned data.

A technique has been developed for simultaneously dehydrating and consolidating preforms prepared by the v.a.d. method of optical-fibre fabrication. The residual OH content has been reduced to 0.03 p.p.m. By controlling the dehydration process, no depletion of GeO2 has been observed.

A family of binary sequences exists with the property that the cross-correlation function of each member with a reference m-sequence has a unique pattern of four peaks with equal offsets from a constant base level. The positive peak is position invariant and knowledge of the locations of the remaining three peaks, which are negative, identifies the sequence. A simple method for generating the sequences is given and an application in the form of a system for data transmission by code modulation of an m-sequence carrier is proposed.
