The use of a loose-tube packaging around an optical fibre offers a high degree of mechanical isolation but can cause severe buckling of the fibre if differential contraction of the packaging occurs. The formation of this buckled state is investigated and loss measurements made on buckled lengths of fibre.

Two multicoupled multimode fibres can act either as an encoder or as its matched-filter decoder, depending on which terminals are used. Such a network which may find applications in communications and microwave systems has been demonstrated using fused T couplers, fibre connectors, and multimode optical-fibre delay lines.

Backward wave microstrip couplers with weak coupling reach small values for the directivity. This is caused by the unequal phase constants of the even and odd modes of the line waves. A very simple compensation method is shown by loading the coupler with additional coupled lines.

HCl addition to the SiO2 c.v.d. process was found to be an efficient method for producing n–InP m.i.s. structures with low density of interface states near conduction band. Remaining deep interface donor states approximately 0.5 eV below conduction band restrict the steady-state bias range in h.f. applications.

Amplitude patterns for parabolic antennas 82 cm in diameter with compensating subreflectors and with a standard hyperboloid have been computed using the Kirchhoff-Huygens-Silver integration method. Patterns at 3 mm wavelength are illustrated together with phase and amplitude patterns for the subreflectors. The predicted improvements at 1 and 3 mm are discussed.

The jointing loss of single-mode fibres is mainly dependent on their numerical apertures, and is largely independent of normalised frequency and fibre diameter. The letter presents simple loss predictions as an aid for practical design work of single-mode fibre joints.

The transient response of a new type of varactor diode consisting of a semiconductor multilayer structure has been calculated by 2-dimensional time-dependent computer simulation. The simulated results show that the transient time of such a diode is somewhat larger than that of the conventional one with the same material parameters and diode dimensions.

The radiation patterns of an open-ended radial waveguide in a magnetoplasma have been obtained at high frequencies under the quasi-longitudinal (q.l.) approximation. It is shown that a radial waveguide can be conveniently used as a spacecraft antenna.

Using properties of eigenvalue sensitivity matrices a procedure is presented for designing state feedback controllers that give the closed loop system a prescribed set of preassigned eigenvalues, minimising a quadratic cost functional.

An inverse filter, incorporating a charge-transfer-device (c.t.d.), tapped analog delay line and digitally programmed tap weights, is reported. This computer controlled analog processor performs a zero-forcing algorithm under software control. The inverse filter (or transversal equaliser) is demonstrated with an LC resonator as the distorting medium. The results show that this processor permits partially overlapping distorted impulses to be clearly discriminated.

A clocked multiplexer circuit was realised which provided 4.48 Gbit/s, 5 Gbit/s, and 7.84 Gbit/s output-pulse streams for p.c.m.-type input tributaries at 1.12 Gbit/s, 0.25 Gbit/s, and 1.12 Gbit/s, respectively. The circuit employed essentially ultra-broadband 180° hybrids, step-recovery diodes, and GaAs Schottky-barrier diodes. Output voltages up to 2 V were obtained across a load of 50 Ω. The pulse width of the output pulses was approximately 100 ps.

Complete chromatic equalisation is not possible in a graded-index fibre owing to the variation of material properties across the core. We show that it is still possible to choose an operating wavelength which effectively eliminates first-order material dispersion.

The transmission characteristics of a TE01-mode waveguide sharp bend, of 1m equivalent radius, are presented. The attenuation is less than 0.25 dB across the frequency band 30–110 GHz.

A silicon n+–p–π–p+ reach-through avalanche photodiode is described, where the p region has a high-low-high doping profile formed by a combination of ion implantation and epitaxy. Effective noise factors as low as 0.008–0.014 have been realised reproducibly for operation in the near-infrared. The influence of the primary photocurrent in the determination of the excess noise is discussed.

A single two-input ternary operator and a single one-input ternary operator are proposed, which together with the logic values 1 and 2 form a functionally-complete set of ternary operators. A particular feature of the proposed operators is their ease of realisation in semiconductor integrated-circuit form, the two-input operator being circuit-wise similar to recently-developed binary exclusive-OR realisations.

A combined pulse-amplitude/pulse-position modulation tachnique is proposed for digital optical communication systems. Evaluations of its behaviour in terms of coding efficiency, spectral density, timing information content, and error probability are summarised. An expression, valid for all T, is found for the variance of the number of zero crossings during a time T for a narrowband Gaussian noise waveform with a symmetric spectrum. It bears an interesting relationship to the variance of 1/π times the waveform's change in phase during this time.
