A satellite-antenna concept is described that permits large-diameter reflectors to be deployed from a single space shuttle payload by using the lightest available reflecting surface. Antenna diameters up to one kilometre are sought for a wire-mesh reflector stretched across a hoop and distended electrostatically into parabolic shape.

The principle of a true acoustic Gray-scale standard is presented and experimentally applied to the scanning acoustic microscope (s.a.m.). The implementation is based on the impedance-matching property of a quarter-wave impedance transformer through which precise changes in reflection coefficient may be produced in a single material. The performance of the first implementation designed for 375 MHz operation is described.

Capacitance/voltage and m.i.s.f.e.t. inversion-mode f.e.t. data are reported for p-type InP. It is shown that the surface of this material appears to be inverted at zero gate bias and that good inversion-mode (normally-off) device behaviour is possible.

The magnitude of a switched-capacitor resistor (sw.c.r.) is controlled by varying the switching frequency. Their use in RC oscillators enables the variation of the frequency of oscillation by changing the relatively high switching frequency. Since the high switching frequency is easily voltage-controlled, the low-frequency oscillator effectively becomes a v.c.o. giving a low-distortion sinusoidal waveform.

A simple and sufficiently accurate digital convertor is suggested that converts a delta sequence of an exponential delta modulator into a sequence of digital numbers. Each number equals the height of the analogue signal at the input of the delta modulator at each moment. The system employs an up-down counter and some logic based on conventional full adders.

Large-area Schottky diodes have been made on epitaxial GaAs produced by liquid-phase, alkyl and trichloride-vapour-phase techniques. D.L.T.S. transient-capacitance experiments failed to detect electron traps in the material in each case. A very low level of low-frequency excess noise was found in diodes with ideal current/voltage characteristics, but devices with excess current at low bias were noisier.

The transformations of the state variable matrices useful in the synthesis of multiport networks are presented. The application of these transformations gives a significant reduction in the number of operational amplifiers necessary for the realisation of the rational voltage transfer matrix.

More than 500 laser diodes have been coupled to graded-index fibres using microscopic glass beads for a proper injection into the fibre core. The coupling efficiencies have a good reproducibility and a high average value.

The maximally flat magnitude beyond the origin is generalised to give filters having a controlled passband characteristic. The Cheby̅shev polynomials are then used as the variable for these generalised approximants to yield the transitional Butterworth-Cheby̅shev filters. Optimisation of these filters is also discussed.

A generalised description is presented of the nonlinear data channel with finite memory. Independent Gaussian noise is added to the channel after the nonlinearity and the criterion for maximum-likelihood reception is formulated. The receiver includes a large number of matched filters; however, the formulation may be rearranged to permit a reduction in this number.

An electrically programmable transversal filter is presented, based on a tapped analogue delay line. The experimental results presented here highlight the large dynamic range capability of the filter structure. The approach is highly suitable for monolithic implementation using standard c.t.d. technology.

An X-band GaAs f.e.t. oscillator is described that uses a novel configuration, designated ‘reverse-channel oscillator’. This provides output powers of up to 0.94 W at 8 GHz and efficiencies as high as 37%. At a higher frequency this configuration provided approximately 300 mW output at 17.5 GHz.

A new principle is proposed for an electrically erasable f.a.m.o.s. device using a simple m.o.s. technology with double polysilicon layers in which the lower (electrically floating) polysilicon gate is left undoped. Writing is accomplished by avalanche injection of electrons from a p-n junction in the substrate as in the original f.a.m.o.s. structure. Erasing proceeds by avalanche injection of electrons from the floating gate induced by voltage pulses applied to the heavily doped upper (control) gate.

The cutoff frequencies of guided modes in a weakly guiding W-type fibre with parabolic core profile have been obtained. It is found that the cutoff frequency of the TE01-mode in such a fibre is much higher than for a homogeneous-core W-type fibre. This should allow greater ease in splicing.

Outputs from linear minimum-variance equalisers have nonzero conditional bias and residual intersymbol interference even at high s.n.r. It is shown that both can be calculated from the covariance of the message estimates produced by the equaliser. The use of the covariance in computing error bounds is also described.
