In this letter, an experimental investigation of a p.c.m. communication system using soiltons as signal carriers is reported. The soliton is a pulse that propagates along a nonlinear dispersive line with constant velocity and without distortion. It is shown that by designing the system appropriately, it is possible to achieve a better performance as far as bit error rate is concerned than the corresponding system with linear dispersive channel.

Some calculated results are presented for the signal that can be propagated to the surface from a toroidal coil source near the bottom of a drill rod. Optimum frequencies are predicted to occur in the range 10–100 Hz for depths of the order of several kilometres.

A low-OH-content and long-length optical fibre has been made by the v.a.d. method. The OH content in the rod preform was reduced to about 0.4 p.p.m. utilising the chemical reactions of SOCl2 or CCl4 with OH ions and H2O molecules In the porous glass rod. The minimum loss of the fibre, 20km long, was 1.0±0.1 dB/km at 1.2μm.

We show that the SiO2/Si is a suitable surface-acoustic-wave structure for integrated oscillators. By adjusting the thickness of the SiO2, layer we can annul the first-order temperature coefficient of the phase delay. In this case the second-order temperature coefficient of frequency is equal to −4.5×10−8/(°C)2 and it is close to that of the quartz ST-X.

A simple and compact m.c.c.d. transversal filter is presented. The device features (a) an input-weight technique to achieve a large output voltage, (b) a new ‘split-input-gate’ weighting to provide accurate filter coefficients, and (c) a simplified electrode structure by using the m.c.c.d. as a summing register.

The temperature dependence of multiplication noise in silicon avalanche photodiodes with a low-high-low impurity density profile is calculated. The variation of multiplication noise by temperature change can be neglected in practical use at a constant multiplication factor, which is in agreement with experimental results.

Results of experiments on the temporal slope-overload phenomenon obtained with a 625 line/5.5 MHz digital television interframe delta modulator are reported. Whereas pictures containing genuine movement are heavily degraded, still pictures contaminated by noise can be rendered usable: s.n.r. improvements from 17 dB (original) to 34 dB (processed) have been obtained

The temperature distribution in semiconductors is usually calculated by means of the indirect Liebmann's method since its absolute stability permits the choice of relatively long time and space steps. It is shown that under dynamic conditions this method is no longer better because of the requirement of a given accuracy. A method of improving the accuracy without undesired increase of the number of division points has been proposed.

A new grounded-capacitor simulation of driving-point impedances of the form as and bs2, corresponding to ideal inductance and frequency-dependent negative resistance (f.d.n.r.) elements, respectively, is presented. The configurations use the minimum of passive components with the d.v.c.c.s./d.v.c.v.s. as the active element. Applications of the active inductance and f.d.n.r. are then proposed in the realisation of some single-resistor-controlled RC oscillators.

We have observed avalanche gain in back-biased Burrus-type double-heterostructure light-emitting diodes operating as photodetectors. This effect may be very beneficial in a duplex transmission system using a single l.e.d. as both source and detector.

A method is presented for optimising the performance indices of aperture antennas in the presence of blockage. An N-dimensional objective function is formed for maximising the directivity factor of a circular aperture with blockage under sidelobe-level constraints, and is minimised using the simplex search method. Optimum aperture distributions are computed for a circular aperture with blockage of circular geometry that gives the maximum directivity factor under sidelobe-level constraints.

A serious problem involving the use of Zn in the formation of GaxIn1−xPyAs1−y double-heterostructure lasers is identified. Contamination of epitaxial layer solutions from Zn is shown to result in misplaced p-n junctions in these devices. The improvement in the laser characteristics of devices having correctly placed p-n junctions is demonstrated.

The reflection coefficient at the feed of a paraboloidal reflector antenna covered with a paraboloidal radome is evaluated by means of the power-coupling theorem. An asymptotic value of the subsequent expression leads to a simple physical interpretation of the result. A comparison between theoretical and experimental results shows that there is a satisfactory measure of agreement between the two.

A new approach is used to determine when the necessary condition for oscillation, Re (Za)<0, holds in a microwave oscillator. Here Za is the Schottky GaAs f.e.t. active network impedance. This analysis has been used to develop a computer program that calculates the frequencies at which the above condition holds. The computer program also provides inband impedances and reflection coefficients and has been utilised to study Ku-band y.i.g.-tuned oscillators. Bandwidth and initial frequency of oscillation curves as functions of f.e.t.-model lumped elements are generated from the computer program.

Design of a wideband adaptive filter incorporating a surface-acoustic-wave monolithic zinc-oxide-on-silicon storage correlator is reported. Its operation is demonstrated with experimental measurements of c.w. interference suppression in a simulated spread-spectrum system. These processors, which are capable of adaptive filtering over 1–20 MHz signal bandwidths in real time, offer significant advantages in terms of complexity and power consumption over equivalent digital systems.

A new connectivity algorithm is proposed for testing whether a circ (a ring sum of two or more f-circuits) of a graph passes for a circuit or not, which is superior to the existing one. The labour involved in the proposed algorithm is proportional to n, as compared to the en of the old algorithm, where e and n represent the number of edges and nodes, respectively, of the graph.

This letter describes the construction and operation of an adaptive filter based on the Widrow least-mean-square adaption algorithm using a 64-point analogue programmable c.c.d. transversal filter as the main processing element.
