Most theoretical investigations of solar cells use a 1-dimensional model for the calculation of the minority-carrier concentration and the characteristics. However, if the surface of the junction is no longer flat, a more-dimensional analysis will, be necessary. A numerical 2-dimensional analysis based on an integral-equation technique is presented to solve the problem.

The letter discusses the optimisation of a 3-level quantiser/coder used for an incoherent receiver which detects a constant c.w. signal in narrowband Gaussian noise. Criteria of optimality utilised in this investigation are based on the efficacy, the divergence and Bhattacharyya distance.

By formulating a general framework for the piecewise solution of the inhomogeneous waveguide differential equation, it is shown that the ‘stratification’ method of solving this equation is formally equivalent to solution by the Euler method, but with substantially greater computation.

Theoretical results of acoustic-surface-wave (a.s.w.) zero-frequency-temperature-coefficient (f.t.c.) configurations in Tl3TaSe4 are discussed. Six selected cuts with an electromechanical coupling coefficient of up to 4% are described, as well as a zero-f.t.c. and zero-power-flow-angle cut with 2% coupling.

Novel slow-wave coplanai striplines on GaAs substrates with m.i.s. or Schottky junctions are described. With these lines, significant reductions in wavelength and bias-dependent behaviours can be achieved at microwave frequencies. The new lines seem potentially very useful for monolithic integration of microwave circuits involving GaAs m.e.s.f.e.t.s.

The phase of crosspolarised signals propagated in an ice-crystal medium is shown to tend to ±π/2 for linear and circular polarisation. This is verified at 30, 14 and 6 GHz by computation for real ice crystals. The conditions for phase jumps of 180° to occur in the crosspolai phase are derived in terms of the orientation of the ice crystals.

Twelve different hole traps have been characterised in v.p.e., 1.p.e., m.b.e. and bulk-grown GaAs from d.1.t.s. experiments. Most are related to the presence of different impurities, some of which are identified. Although far from complete, this catalogue of hole traps can be a working tool, particularly for the assessment of the impurity contamination in a material.

The signal/noise ratio is estimated in comparing p–i–n and a.p.d. photodetectors. In the longer-wavelength region, the p–i–n diode is expected to be superior to the a.p.d., although, in the shorter-wavelength region, under 1.0μm, the converse is true.

This letter shows that an n-element circular array can have up to n – 1 independent zeros in the 360° range of its directional pattern and describes suitable phasing networks to steer independently these zeros. Experimental results are presented for steering two nulls with a 4-element circular array, and the significance of certain pattern-distortion terms is briefly discussed.

An insertion-test-signal generator using p.a.m. pulse techniques, and capable of generating any desired waveform, is presented. The generator could be realised as an m.s.i. chip. It is shown that, for bandlimited channels, the generated p.a.m. pulse waveform is equivalent to the continuous one.

We determine the first antiresonance conductance and the length of a large-bandwidth flat symmetrical dipole in terms of its width. Good efficiency has been obtained on an array acting at 9.9 GHz with a gain of 18 dB and a relatively large bandwidth.

A technique for producing low-loss splices in single-mode fibres has been developed and evaluated. The splices are made by sandwiching the fibre butt-joint ends between a glass V-groove block and a flat glass plate, both of which are made by fibre-drawing techniques. A new splice-loss measuring technique is described. The majority of splices made on identical fibres have losses of less than 0.01 dB.

An experimental study of the low-frequency-noise properties of n-channel epitaxial silicon films on insulator m.o.s. s.o.s. transistors has been performed. The measurements show an excessive noise contribution at drain voltages corresponding to the current-kink effect for temperatures ranging from 4.2 to 300 K.

An approximate theoretical relationship between rain depolarisation and attenuation, valid for Earth-space paths at microwave and millimetre wavelengths, is presented. The relationship is sufficiently general that it allows the prediction of rain-depolarisation statistics from attenuation statistics available for other frequencies, polarisations and elevation angles.

A bandpass filter and a discriminator for r.f. signals have been constructed by using fibre-optic delay lines, and their frequency-response characteristics have been investigated. Both devices had a fundamental frequency of 193 MHz, and the filter had a 3 dB passband of 10 MHz.

Very-high-purity l.p.e. InP layers with a μ77 of 67 000cm2/Vs and an n77 of 1.1 × 1015 cm−3, virtually uncompensated, having a low freeze-out ratio of 1.03, and with continuous surfaces with terraces but no inclusions, have been successfully grown, after the residual silicon donor in the melt has been baked away in H2 with trace amounts of H2O.

The generation of a bipolarity solitary wave (soliton) is examined by using a transmission line containing gyromagnetic nonlinear inductors. The results indicate that a transmission line of the form shown here can be used in high-peak-power pulse-generating networks.

A new optimisation criterion is proposed, which enables the minimisation of the ripple of an amplifier, while controlling the absolute value of its gain, with reduced computing time. A gain of 8.25 ± 0.35 dB has been calculated for a power f.e.t. amplifier optimised over the band from 6 to 9 GHz.
