The orthogonal network locus and the Llewellyn stability conditions of a 2-port network are plotted on a 3-dimensional T-matrix diagram. This gives a graphical indication of the effects of source and load immittance on the stability properties of the orthogonal network.

The letter investigates the influence of a thermionic-type injected current on the dynamic operating conditions and performance of GaAs impatt diodes. For this study, the computer program developed for high-efficiency impatt diodes has been used extensively. The work shows that interesting results can be obtained in X-band and that the practical realisation of such a device would be possible by using a transistor in which the transistor effect, avalanche effect and transit-time effect are used in combination.

A method is given whereby the radii and refractive indices of the core and cladding of a step-index optical fibre can be determined uniquely from the backward-scattered pattern. The technique is based on the analysis of various rays that contribute to the formation of the back-scattered pattern.

An experiment to determine the forward-scattering complex amplitude functions of waterdrops supported in a vertical wind tunnel is described. The measuring system is calibrated using a metal sphere of accurately known diameter. Measurements at 11 GHz on waterdrops in the range 1.6–3.1 mm radius are compared with theoretical values obtained by Oguchi using the point-matching technique.

A technique is described that enables the odd-order frequency multiples of a sinusoidal voltage to be generated. The circuit uses analogue multipliers and op. amps., but no tuned-circuit components. Practical results are presented and fundamental limitations of the technique are discussed.

The r.f. surface reflectivity of a parabolic antenna reflector fabricated from carbon fibre reinforced plastic with high modulus fibres, has been investigated at L- and S-band frequencies by a swept frequency gain comparison method. The gain of the antenna with the reflector uncoated was compared with that of the same unit but with a metal coating on the reflector.

A quadrature scheme is described for the calculation of the radiation field of an open-ended guiding structure directly from the longitudinal field components of the mode in the aperture. The calculated radiation pattern for a rectangular waveguide and a regular polygon dielectric rod agree well with known results. Radiation patterns for rectangular dielectric rod are also presented.

A method combining the ‘generalised telegraphist's equations’ with a mode-matching technique is proposed well suited for the calculation of short horn antennas. Curves are given for the optimum flare angle, gain and reflection coefficient of a plane sectoral horn excited in the TEM mode. It is shown, that for short horns the aperture-throat interactions cannot be neglected.

The disturbing effect of a thin wire on the radiation pattern of a quarter-wave monopole is measured. Theories based on the geometrical theory of diffraction are shown to give good approximation to the measured results.

The r.m.s. impulse response width of germania doped fibres having power-law profiles at the carrier wavelength is evaluated with the help of a numerical method and measured values of dn/dλ. For Δn/n≈0.02, our result exceeds by more than one order of magnitude that obtained from an analytical formula based on the assumption that ndn/dλ varies linearly with n2. The optimum profiles are found to differ very significantly from power-law profiles. Our numerical technique is based on scalar-ray optics. It is applicable to any fibre having a large V-number and a smooth profile.

A method for preparation of thin Al2O3 films using pyrolytic reactions is proposed and some electrical and optical properties of the films are investigated. The applicability of the films as an active dielectric in m.o.s. structures is discussed.

Internal behaviour of an n-p-n−-n+ high-voltage power transistor for the avalanche-multiplication-region operating conditions is presented as obtained by a mathematical model. This model incorporates the avalanche generation of carriers due to electric field and current density and the resulting semiconductor transport equations are solved in two dimensions by numerical methods.

The letter details results obtained from an experimental hybrid parametric amplifier at 30 MHz pumped at 800 MHz. Gain of up to 5.5 dB was observed and this varied with signal circuit inductance in accordance with theory. This type of negative resistance parametric amplifier does not exhibit oscillation with increase in pump power and may therefore have considerable application.

The elastic strain imposed on a multimode optical fibre by physical deformation is shown to have a significant influence on propagation. The propagation, and in particular the mode coupling, behaves as though the fibre were unstrained but had, instead, a reduced curvature everywhere.

Experimental measurements support a theoretical argument suggesting that if the collector current of a b.j.t. is plotted against collector-base voltage, for set values of base-emitter drive voltage, then the tangents to the characteristics at a given collector-base voltage, in the forward-active region, have a common intersection point on the collector-base voltage axis. The usefulness of this parameter, designated the early-intercept voltage, in the analysis of some linear i.e. schemes is mentioned.

An acoustic surface-wave resonator was studied using a heterodyning laser probe. The resonator consists in two periodic gratings ion-implanted in an ST cut-quartz substrate and an interdigital transducer deposited between gratings. The positioning of the transducer with respect to the standing wave pattern was investigated, the frequency being about 125 MHz. The variation of the transducer impedance around the resonance frequency is a function of this positioning and it was established that the greatest impedance change is obtained when the transducer fingers are in coincidence with the standing wave antinodes of the displacement perpendicular to the surface.

Gulyaev-Bleustein waves (GBWs) circulating on closed paths have been observed on CdS single crystal. Four round-trip transits were visible on the oscilloscope in the range of 20–70 MHz, representing a total delay time of 190 μs. The resolution of the different output signals was achieved by means of selective amplification. The device had a narrow bandwidth (~1 MHz)at frequencies used.

An optical-transmission error-rate experiment is described in which the carrier generator is a directly modulated double heterojunction AlGaAs laser. It is shown that 800 Mb/s modulation can be achieved with sufficiently high quality that the received signal can be regenerated with error rates in accordance with predictions based on Personick's theory.
