Consideration of the formula for the fourth moment of the amplitude distribution of an m-sequence subject to lowpass filtering leads to a design criterion for choice of an m-sequence and filter to give close approximation to a Gaussian signal.

A computerised search procedure is described for finding new binary codes The method involves the extension of a given known code by annexing a number of parity-check digits to it in such a way that the minimum Hamming distance of the given code is improved. A number of codes found by this procedure have better rates than the best known codes of identical Hamming distance and the same number of information digits; a table of these codes is presented.

A measuring and correction procedure for network-analyser measurements of microstrip circuits is presented which does not need exactly reproducible coaxial-to-microstrip transitions. The transmission properties of the transitions and the parameters of the microstrip lines are determined by transmission measurements of two homogeneous lines; the input reflection coefficient of the coaxial-to-microstrip transition is measured directly at the microstrip circuit under test using sliding-load techniques. Assuming the transition to have low losses, its backward reflection coefficient can be calculated approximately. The measured scattering parameters of the microstrip circuit are corrected using these values, and a measurement example shows the results of this procedure.

A known method of generating maximum-length sequences by employing delay lines in place of shift-register elements has been realised with base-coupled logic (b.c.l.). Sequences at speeds of up to 1.2 Gbit/;s have been produced.

It is shown that the distortion caused by nonlinear smearing at high signal levels in charge-coupled devices may be vastly reduced by only using alternate signal inputs, followed by summation of the signals in adjacent cells at the output.

A planar waveguide model for microstrip is used to obtain an improved method of correcting for curvature effects in ring resonators. The extent of the improvement is illustrated by a comparison of experimental measurements and theoretical predictions of microstrip dispersion.

The attenuation rate for the transmission mode for a horizontal wire elevated over the earth is considered in the longwave limit. Theoretical support is provided to indicate the attenuation is proportional to the first power of the frequency. This is in disagreement with an earlier development by Knight.

A method is presented for the design of multivariable model reference adaptive control systems by Lyapunov's second method. The method can be applied to a class of systems in which the misaligned elements of the plant matrices cannot be compensated independently.

A novel configuration using the differential voltage-controlled current source, differential voltage-controlled voltage source (d.v.c.c.s./d.v.c.v.s.) as the active building block is introduced. The realisations of bandpass and lowpass filters are given as special cases; both filters are canonic, and a moderate pole Q-factor can be obtained in each case.

It is shown theoretically, and verified experimentally, that a photodiode, illuminated by monochromatic light of varying wavelength, may show interference ripples in its responsivity, owing to multiple reflections between the diode front and back contact. The amplitude of the ripples is found to increase linearly with the avalanche multiplication factor.
