The width of the travelling high-field domain in a Gunn diode has been determined for a device with one surface loaded by a dielectric material (LiNbO3). The domain width inferred from the shape of the acoustic pulse that is generated in the adjacent piezoelectric dielectric material.

A numerical study of a composite dielectric resonator of coaxial type is proposed. It consists in finding a simple equivalent structure on which the influence of electrical and geometrical parameters on frequency are well known. A knowledge of the thermal drifts of these parameters can be used for the design of a temperature-stabilised composite resonator. The validity of the method is tested experimentally.

A balanced GaAs m.e.s.f.e.t. power stage has been developed for the 7–8 GHz satellite communication frequency band. At 7.5 GHz, the output power at 1 dB comparession 1 W with a power added efficiency of 37%. The small-signal gain was 6.65 ± 0.45 dB across the frequency band. The small-signal gain, phase, group delay and input and output v.s.w.r. as function of frequency are described. Large-signal gain saturation and 3rd-order intermodulation distrotion measurements are also presented.

Es wird gezeigt, daβ phasenselektive Gleichrichter bei Verwendung von Dual-MOS-Transistoren von sehr tiefen Frequenzen an bis hinein in den MHz-Bereich gute Ergebisse erbringen. Eine Kompensation kapazitiver Einflüsse erfolgt nach dem Prinzip des ‘kompensierten Spannungsteilers’ im Serien-Parallel-Betrieb des Dual-MOS-Transistors. Die Ansteuerung der zwei MOS-Transistoren geschieht alternierend.It will be shown that, using dual m.o.s. transistors, phasesensitive rectifiers supply good results from very low frequencies to the megahertz region. Capacitive influences are compensated after the principle of ‘compensated voltage divider’ in series/shunt mode of the dual m.o.s. transistors. The two m.o.s. transistors are driven alternately.

Experimental evidence is presented which suggests that the degradation of Au-GaAs Schottky-barriers after annealing is due to the outmigration of gallium into the gold, resulting in the formation of an n+ region beneath the contact.

Toraldo di Francia's results on mode number through ring pupils are applied to graded-index fibres. The previously found numbers of trapped and leaky modes are confirmed, but a question is raised concerning whether an incoherent omni-directional source does excite all the fibre modes with equal power.

A general method for realising wave active filters based on unit-element (u.e.) prototype filters is described. The systhesis of a wave active filter having a general allpass transfer function is presented to illustrate the approach. Experimental results for a 2nd-order case are presented to show that the synthesis method will lead to practical realisations.

A method of C(V) profiling using only two mercury Schottky diodes is described. It allows fast profiles of doping level and conductivity of thin semiconductor layers on insulating substrates to be made, without any damage on the surface. This makes the method useful for wafer mapping in concentration, thickness and conductivity.

A machine has been designed and constructed to prepare the ends of optical fibres prior to jointing. It is intended to be simple in operation, while maintaining accurately controlled breaking conditions to ensure that mirror-finished fibre ends are made with complete reliability.

An optical fibre-fibre connector is described by means of which several single fibres can be connected simultaneously. With multimode step-index fibres, insertion losses smaller than 0.1 dB have been measured. No temperature influence up to nearly 100°C has been found.

An optical-repeater error-rate experiment is described in which graded-index fibres up to 8 km long are used as a transmission medium. It is shown that 100 Mb/s modulation can be achieved with sufficiently high quality that the received signal can be regenerated for a given bit rate up to the 8 km fibre tested.

Experiments with simultaneous storage and correlation of signals launched into a Schottky-diode acoustoelectric memory correlator through different spatially orthogonal transducers are reported. The decoupling problem is considered for a class of multi-input multi-output time-delay systems, the parameters of which do not satisfy the conditions for total decoupling, i.e. the conditions for decouplin all input/output pairs. It is shown that in this case it is possible to decouple number of input/output pairs equal to the rank of the decoupling matrix. The partial decoupling procedure is illustrated by means of an example.

The letter reports simulation studies of cache storage in a real-time minicomputer environment. Direct mapping is shown to be the most effective approach to cache management and the speedup achieved is also seen to depend on the class of program. Speedup factors of more than 5:1 can be achieved with modest-sized cache stores and relatively simple hardware.

The effect on signal/noise ratio of moving an inductive load away from the drive point of a monopole antenna is studied. The variation of this ratio with load position is determined as a function of previously derived empirical expressions for relative radiation resistance and load reactance. Small signal/noise improvements can be obtained at low sky temperatures.

The letter presents a design method for moving-target indicators (m.t.i.) with minimal transient response time. We shall show that the conventional linear-phase real-coefficient digital filter (type A) may be tranformed to an equivalent nonlinear-phase real-coefficient filter (type B), but having half the passband order. Further, the type-B filter can be transformed to obtain a filter of an identical magnitude response, but having half the transient response time (type C).

In many practical applications the performance of an offset parabolic-reflector antenna is limited by the offset reflectors' depolarising and beam-squinting properties. The letter describes a new class of primary-feed antennas which overcome these limitations. The new primary-feed types offer a significant improvement in the crosspolar and beam-squinting properties of the offset reflector antenna, without adding significantly to the complexity or mass of the primary-feed system.

The solution of large m.i.c.-subassemblies presents a major problem to any numerical method. However, it would seem that the first step should involve a numerical routine of a very general nature for simple discontinuities in 3-dimensional structures. A simple formula has been derived by means of a perturbation approach, yielding the cutoff υ-values in an optical fibre with parabolic index profile in the core, and uniform cladding. The corresponding count of propagating modes matches well with the law υ1/4, predicted by previous theories.

The severe fading caused by the snow of 1st March 1974 on microwave links of a propagation experiment being conducted in the Mendlesham area, Suffolk, England, is analysed. The figures derived from this event include the relative effects of snow on the antennas and in the propagation path, and the advantage offered by using switched-path diversity.

In a previous letter, it was shown that digital frequency-shift signals could, in principle, be recovered without intersymbol interference, and a narrowband characteristic for binary f.s.k. was derived. The theory is now extended to cover both multilevel f.s.k. and wideband f.s.k. carried over lowpass channels. In all cases, channel characteristics can be found which yield zero i.s.i. in the signal after frequency demodulation. It is shown that, for a given information rate, the bandwidth required is minimised by use of 4-level f.s.k.
