A chart is presented for the transformation of the reflection coefficient by a section of a uniform grating designed to couple the forward and backward waves in a guiding structure. The chart is useful in filter design by cascaded grating sections.

A formulation of ray optics that takes the polarisation of electromagnetic waves into account shows that the maximum difference in time delay between corresponding HE and EH modes is, for almost any multimode graded-index fibre, of the order of 10 000 (Δn/n)2/V ns/km, where V is the V-number of the fibre and Δn is the variation of the refractive index between axis and cladding. The effect of polarisation on pulse broadening is found to be negligible if the V-number of the fibre is much larger than about 20.

New optically active biphenyl compounds have been synthesised. Low-melting mixtures with biphenyl nematogens give stable, room-temperature cholesteric liquid crystals of positive dielectric anisotropy. These give the cholesteric-nematic electro-optical phase-change effect. Mixtures of the new compounds exhibit thermochromism—selective reflection of light varying with temperature.

A uniform diffraction solution is given for an electromagnetic wave incident on perfectly conducting surface having a discontinuity in curvature. The solution is derived from an asymptotic evaluation of the physical-optics integral, and correction factors are deduced to retrieve the rigorous nonuniform result away from the reflection boundary.

To account for the changes in the Cgs/Vgs and Ids/Vgs characteristics of silicon-gate m.o.s. transistors after a period of b.t stress, a theoretical model is proposed in which charge trapped at the Si–SiO2 interface is distributed nonuniformly along the length of the channel.

The nonlinear behaviour of an inductance simulating a gyrator–capacitor circuit is studied. The nonlinearity is the saturation of one of the two operational transconductance amplifiers which are used in the realisation of the gyrator. The effect of this nonlinearity in a series tuned circuit, in which the simulated inductance is an element, is the occurrence of the jump phenomenon. A theoretical study is carried out using the describing-function technique. Experimental results are in good agreement with theory.

Short pulses of surface acoustic waves are launched efficiently by an inline assembly of several finger-pair interdigital transducers, which are connected to successive taps of an electrical delay line, where the electrical time lag between two taps is equal to the acoustic delay between corresponding transducers.

Some new results showing the classification of Boolean functions of order n, n ≤ 5, under the Rademacher–Walsh transform, together with the operation of spectral translation, are examined. It is found that there are 48 prototype functions, of which 21 are threshold functions. Examination of the canonic spectral forms of these threshold functions shows that a threshold function may be identified uniquely for n ≤ 5, under a sum-of-squares criterion.

A new depletion m.o.s. transistor is proposed. The structure uses anisotropic etching to define the channel in an n–p epitaxial silicon slice. The fabrication, characteristics and power capabilities of the device are discussed.

The crosspolar radiation pattern of a corrugated waveguide is investigated theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that agreement can be obtained when the effects of space harmonics, the waveguide flange and a higher-order mode are included in the theory.
