Combining the attributes of charge-coupled-device analogue signal processors with those of surface-acoustic-wave devices promises a compact and inexpensive way of extracting Doppler frequency information from coherent pulse-radar signals. Experimental tests confirm the feasibility of the technique and point the way to a fairly simple processing module which should be applicable to a range of radar parameters.

Surface-wave holographic techniques can be used to detect the presence of small defects. The detection limit is usually determined not by signal to noise considerations, but rather by the presence of spurious background signals, such as bulk waves. The letter describes a technique for eliminating this background, and demonstrates the improvement in the detection limit.

A perturbation method has been used to calculate the attenuation coefficients in the cladding and in the jacket of all modes. Numerical results clearly show the increase of cladding attenuation with characteristic angle and the decrease of jacket attenuation with increasing cladding.

An improved diode convolver is described which uses a 150-tap lithium-niobate surface-acoustic-wave delay line and an exceptionally uniform array of silicon-on-sapphire diodes. Uniformity of the 0.012 cm spaced diodes over the 150-tap interaction region is constant within a few percent, leading to larger bandwidth and larger time-bandwidth operation than has previously been possible. Electronically variable chirp signal correlation is demonstrated with chirp bandwidth up to 20 MHz.

A noise-cancelling communication microphone using a piezoelectric plastic as the transducer element has been developed. The bimorph structure adopted in conjunction with an impedance matching preamplifier circuit and suitable acoustic design provides an adequate, stable output at low impedance, with an acceptable frequency response. The susceptibility of the microphone to electromagnetic fields is low.

The letter considers a W-type slab waveguide in which a number of modes propagate. The significant feature is found to be the mode reservoir effect of a ray temporarily transformed into a leaky ray, owing to imperfections of the guide. Such disturbances cause little radiation loss if they are localised within the attenuation length of the leaky ray.

A technique proposed requires the generation of a set of carrier-frequency phase references and auxiliary phase detectors. An n-phase system requires n phase references and n phase detectors. This technique is illustrated by a description of a 4-phase synchronous detector.

A new convenient circuit for computing the magnitude of the sum of two vectors which are perpendicular to each other is described. The circuit consists of operational amplifiers and logic gates, and its main function is achieved by charging and discharging a capacitor. Since input and output signals are all given in analogue values, represented by pulse width, they can easily be converted into digital codes to interface a sampled-data system, if necessary.

The scattering coefficients of a general microstrip offset junction are calculated. This is done by a modal analysis based on a microstrip-line waveguide model. Theoretical results are compared with measurement.

Le oscillazioni spurie in bassa frequenza dei diodi IMPATT possono essere evitate mediante I'impiego di una nuova soluzione. Essa é basata sull'uso di una ferrite a microonde (nonpolarizzata magneticamente) in prossimità del diodo. Essa si comporta come un dielettrico nello spettro delle microonde e come un materiale magnetico ad alte perdite nell'intervallo delle frequenze spurie (basse frequenze).IMPATT-diode low-frequency spurious oscillations can be avoided by using a magnetically unbiased microwave ferrite close to the diode. It behaves as a low-loss dielectric in the microwave spectrum and a high-loss material in the spurious (low-frequency) range.

The bit error probability associated with the individual binary symbols is discussed for Gray-coded m.p.s.k. signals for large s.n.r.s. All Gray codes with uniform as well as with the most nonuniform bit error probability distribution are given for 16-phase signals; 8-phase signals and 32-phase signals are also considered.

It has been found that r.f. currents produce 1/f noise in certain resistors. This is of practical importance, because it may well account for the low-frequency noise produced in wideband multicarrier systems, and is of theoretical interest because the prevailing theories on 1/f noise do not predict this noise.

Microwave measurements of dielectric loss by a hemispherical open resonator may be in error if the resistivity of the plane mirror on which the sample rests differs greatly from that of the concave mirror. The error can be corrected if the ratio of the two resistivities is known or eliminated by using a sample which is an integral number of half wavelengths long.

A summary is given of all the attenuation data derived since June 1968 from sun-tracking radiometers located at the Appleton Laboratory, Slough. The new results at 37 and 71 GHz include data on the angular variation of attenuation and on the occurrence of fades exceeding specified values.
