A new class of lowpass filter, with all transmission zeros at infinity, having a monotonic passband response is described. The transfer function of these filters, referred to as transitional Halpern-Thomson (t.h.t.) filters, depends on a variable parameter that enables a tradeoff between, the overshoot and the risetime in response to a unit-step input.

A detection and partial-correction (d.p.c.) system located at the receiver in a 1st-order d.p.c.m. system enables isolated transmission errors that would cause gross distortion in the recovered signal of a conventional d.p.c.m. decoder to be corrected from the received data, providing that the input signal does not exhibit a rapid change in its slope during a sampling period. The d.p.c. system is disabled when this occurs.

A technique for plotting the nonequilibrium capacitance/voltage curves of an m.o.s. capacitor is proposed. A gated amplifier makes it possible to plot these curves directly on an xy recorder. The method is especially suitable for determining the impurity profiles in silicon. Static high-frequency capacitance/voltage curves can also be obtained. Some experimental data are presented as an example.

The loss of gain due to surface-current attenuation on an uncoated carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastics reflector antenna has been investigated by comparing an uncoated antenna with the same unit with the addition of a metallised surface. The measurements show that the gain loss of the test antenna is of the order of 0.5 dB at X band frequencies.

A method of evaluating the Laplace transform of the state vector by a simple signal-flow graph of the state equations is presented. The coefficients of the numerator and denominator polynomials in Mason's gain formula are obtained from sub-graphs whose transmittances are real numbers.

High-efficiency TRAPATT operation in X band has been obtained using a silicon p+–n–n+ structure with an integral-heatsink technology. 35.8% efficiency with 12.3 W output and 15 W at 30.6% efficiency have been obtained in the frequency range 8.4–9.6 GHz. Precise doping-level control has enabled a high degree of reproducibility to be realised from slice to slice, and a well characterised processing technology results in high yields of efficient devices.

The local plane-wave decomposition approach used to analyse optical fibres of arbitrary refractive-index profiles has been extended to include the case of so called ‘leaky’ rays. The result thus obtained for acceptance angle represents a generalisation of results derived previously for simple forms of the profile by geometrical-optics methods.

The validity of large-signal y parameters for use in the design of microwave-transistor power amplifiers has been investigated, and simple design equations have been derived for the optimum source and load terminations. The predicted terminations are in good agreement with those experimentally obtained with a 1 GHz 1 W amplifier.

A solid-state photodetector is proposed using an SnO2 transparent layer as a constitutive element in conjunction with a Gen substrate. Special attention is paid to the photo-conductive mode (reverse-biased diode). The electrical characteristics and optical spectral responsivity are reported, noise measurements show a typical contact effect and allow n.e.p. determination. From measured specifications, it appears that, in comparison with commercially available photodiodes, such a structure could be of interest.

Measured signal/quantising-distortion ratio (s.q.d.r.) of a high-information delta-modulation codec, both as a function of input level and samplin frequency, is presented. The loss in s.q.d.r. compared with uniform delta modulation is discussed. Meeting requirements on s.q.d.r. is shown to be separable from fulfilling those on dynamic range.

Three nearly identical surface-acoustic-wave resonator filters at ≃ 35 MHz have been fabricated with aluminium metallisation on yz LiNbO3 substrates. The filters are electrically cascaded to yield a combined frequency response that exhibits 80 dB sidelobe suppression, Q ≃ 3000, no spurious responses in the range 1–500 MHz and an insertion loss in a 50 Ω system of only 13 dB.

A directional coupler is described that, unlike conventional couplers, contains lossy elements (resistors). The resulting increase in insertion loss is the tradeoff for the simple design and the broadband capabilities.

Experimental measurements have been made into the low-level variation of signal strength with height over the sea at a wavelength of 0.24 m. A disagreement between the results and the theoretical predictions has been correlated with surface features in coastal waters, and the conclusion is drawn that these are of importance in propagation at radar frequencies.
