Quantitative experimental results of the effect of surface and crystalline quality on acoustic-surface-wave attenuation on yz lithium niobate are presented. All data were taken at room temperature and at approximately 1.9 GHz. Surface roughness of the order of 0.25 wavelength causes an approximately 50% increase in the surface-wave attenuation.
Overlength modes of InP transferred-electron devices

Simulations of overlength modes in InP transferred-electron devices indicate microwave conversion efficiencies greater than 25%. The maximum frequency of operation exceeds 20 GHz. but depends markedly on the nature of the electronic intervalley scattering processes and associated relaxation effects.
Picosecond mode delays in gradient-refractive-index fibres

The effect of refractive-index profiling in multimode fibres on modal time-delay differences and on modal wavelength dispersion is evaluated. The delay can be made negligible compared with the modal dispersion. The latter is comparable in magnitude, but opposite in sign, to glass dispersion.

A fast b.c.d. multiplier is proposed, based on obtaining the product of a 1-digit multiplicand and a 1-digit multiplier in a single row of adders. For high-speed operation, the carry-save technique universally adopted for binary multipliers, is used.
Feedback stability of open-loop unstable systems: contraction-mapping approach

Recent results obtained by Freeman on the stability of linear multivariable feedback systems using the concept of contraction mapping are extended to include open-loop unstable plants. A consequence of the results is a new form of Rosenbrock's stability criterion for open-loop unstable minimum-phase systems.

Total attenuation and scatter loss measurements have been made on optical-fibre waveguides produced with graded refractive-index profiles in GeO-2-SiO2 cores. The total attenuation of the fibres at semiconductor-laser wavelengths has been reduced to less than 4 dB/km.

In digital filters, nonlinear phenomena caused by adder overflow can occur. Some of these phenomena that have been observed in a 2nd-order recursive digital filter are mentioned. A circuit is described in which the error produced by overflow is delayed and fed back into the filter. It is shown that this circuit improves the overflow behaviour.

The probability distribution of atmospheric emission noise from the zenith at 110 GHz has been measured by a radiometer at Slough, UK. The derived attenuations in the vertical direction exceed 13 and 6 dB for 0·5 and 5% of the time, respectively.

The application of m.o.s. bucket-brigade shift registers to obtaining time-axis conversion is discussed. By alternately introducing information in one unit at one frequency and reading out a parallel unit at another frequency, multiplication of the signal frequency is achieved equal to the ratio of the input to the output frequency. Construction of a system for audio use is described, and the results obtained are presented.

A technique is proposed for the decomposition of stored-program sequential machines into nonloopfree structures. The resulting submachines are found to be of uniform or near-uniform structure, and can be realised from commercially available memory units, with little or no redundancy in storage requirements.
