A degenerate nonlinear surface-wave convolver has been built from nonsymmetrical couplers working as beamwidth compressors to increase the acoustic power density and thus the bilinear merit factor. The measured results are compared with those of the classical LiNbO3 convolver, and the practical advantages of this new structure are pointed out. To demonstrate the device capability, the autocorrelation function of a linear f.m. pulse whose b.t. product was 120 has been performed.

The letter discusses field-strength measurements made with a narrow-beam scanning receiving aerial on an occasion when widespread rain embraced two 4 GHz transhorizon radio paths, the modification to the angular distribution of the troposcatter energy brought about by the rain being used to indicate the presence of rain scatter. A weather radar and rain gauges distributed along the paths aided the interpretation of the results. It is suggested that rain on such paths is not likely to contribute significantly to the path-loss statistics, but rain may cause significant changes in the mean direction of arrival of the scatter signals, whereas clear-air inhomogeneities in the refractive index produce somewhat smaller changes.

A sequency-division multiplexing system is described that operates on multilevel data signals, where the output carrier does not contain more levels than the input. The system also possesses an efficient tradeoff between error correction and the number of channels in use. All operations are done in the residue number system, where the ideal p is any odd number. The system is particularly suited for data coded in is-complement fashion, and results for a 16-channel system are shown.

Halfadders modulo 2N are regarded as finite-state sequential machines, and are implemented with read-only memories. The application of the theory of ‘closed’ partitions is shown to lead to considerable savings in the memory storage required, which improves with increasing word lengths, and gives a very regular interconnection pattern and parallel operation.

This letter describes a new notation, inspired by Roth's concept of ‘D cubes’, of use in test-sequence generation for digital circuits. The notation identifies three modes of behaviour for logic modules (subcircuits): faultless operation, fault-effect generation and fault-effect transmission.

A band-rejection filter using high-impedance mode conversion/reconversion is described. The high-impedance properties of the resonant elements make it possible to add these elements to a conventional bandpass cavity, and thereby obtain a combined circuit with complex transmission properties. An example is described in which two transmission bands, with a frequency of high rejection in between, are realised in one physical cavity.

The phenomenon of mode conversion/reconversion is considered in terms of filter theory, and the principles applied to a surface-acoustic-wave rejection filter. A rejection peak exceeding 40 dB is obtained with an overall rejection bandwidth of 1%.

Pulsed Gunn-diode oscillators with low frequency drift across the pulse (chrip) have been produced in the X and J bands. Using simple circuit techniques, uncompensated chirps from 30 to 100 MHz are reduced to less than 2 MHz.

We present a theoretical analysis of the mode spectrum for elastic waves localised at the top of a semi-infinite rectangular ridge. We find their speeds of propagation to be well below the values obtained previously, where the ridge is supported by a substrate.

An electrically variable phase shifter employing surface acoustic waves is described that uses electrical depolarisation of a poled PZT ceramic. Phase shifting occurs in a depoling region in which an electric field of variable strength opposes the remanent ferroelectric moment, causing a change in the piezoelectric coupling and surface-wave velocity.
