As part of Alstom Energy Technology Centre's research into the application of advanced control to gasifiers, the company issued a `benchmark challenge' to the UK control community. Embedded computer systems often remain in service long after part or all of the hardware has become obsolete, due to the high cost of replacement. This cost occurs as often software has to be rewritten for the new hardware. Portable code allows compiled software to be executed on any platform without change. This enables hardware to be replaced when it is obsolete, but software to be moved to the new hardware unchanged-so reducing the cost of obsolescence. - Author(s): T. Hey

The basic ideas of quantum computation are introduced by a brief discussion of Bennett (1973, 1982) and Fredkin's (1982, 1997) ideas of reversible computation. After some remarks about Deutsch's (1985) pioneering work on quantum complexity and Shor's (1996) factorisation algorithm, quantum logic gates, qubits and registers are discussed. The role of quantum entanglement is stressed and Grover's (1997) quantum search algorithm described in detail. The controller area network is a well-established networking system specifically designed with real-time requirements in mind. Developed in the 1980s by Robert Bosch, its ease of use and low cost has led to its wide adoption throughout the automotive and automation industries. Consult Hyperion has designed and built prototypes for BT which show the use of a Multos multi-application smart card for storing a digital ID and then demonstrating various E-commerce business applications (secure E-mail, ticketing, Web site log on etc.) via a variety of devices and networks. The article attempts to define three principal areas: firstly, what is a system, secondly what is a project, and thirdly, what is an engineer. Salient points have been extracted that provide an insight into what knowledge a systems engineer must possess. The result of the discussion of what constitutes a project rules out a number of areas that are normally considered as defining parameters, especially by industry; they are cost, time and whether the project is specifiable. The only area that stands a more rigorous examination is the ability to let a contract.
