Line-symmetric series-tapered (LSST) broadband directional couplers with asymmetric guides only in their parallel coupling regions are designed and fabricated using silica waveguides on Si. These couplers, which provide any wavelength-flattened response over the 1.3–1.55 µm range, are realised with a more detailed broadband coupling ratio design than a conventional LSST coupler.
