A novel square-law demodulator with low input power requirements has been developed for use in ASK/FSK heterodyne optical receivers. 10"9 BER sensitivity better than-29dBra was achieved for a 648Mbit/s ASK signal with carrier scanned from 1 to 4GHz. The flatness of the responsivity was better than ± 1 dB over the same input bandwidth.

Inspec keywords: optical communication equipment; receivers; frequency shift keying; amplitude modulation; demodulators
