High-quality optical fibre polarisers based upon surface plasmon wave generation in a thin metal overlay have been reported recently. The letter presents experimental results using high birefringence fibre which indicate two forms of polarising action, dependent on the parameters of the device, allowing selection of the polarisation transmitted.
