A macroblock-dependent zigzag scanning (MDZS) algorithm for H.264/AVC to reduce bit rates is presented. By reordering the statistical occurrence values introduced from quantised coefficients of the final mode in descending order, the proposed MDZS algorithm generates a representative zigzag scanning pattern for each macroblock. Experimental results show that the proposed MDZS algorithm reduces the bit rates by 2.98 and 1.68% on average for intra- and intermode, respectively.
