The Virgin Pendolino trains, manufactured and maintained by Alstom, have revolutionised the performance of the West Coast Main Line route since their introduction in 2003. Energy monitoring was recognised as an important factor from the outset and the train specification included a requirement to measure the energy consumed and regenerated by the train. An extended trial of an independent energy metering system has been performed on one train in conjunction with ATOC and the Department for Transport. The results have been extensively analysed to determine the factors affecting energy usage on the working railway. The conclusions have been used to develop energy saving initiatives that are already proving effective in service. (5 pages)
