In this paper, we investigate the H.264/AVC codec from two angles. The first is complexity of the reference H.264/AVC encoder. The second is error resilience update of the encoder using adaptive intra refresh (AIR). We propose a novel intra macroblock (MB) selection method to improve the error robustness of the H.264 codec. The proposed algorithm outperforms the one in the reference H.264/AVC codec without any increase in computational complexity.
