The 3G data services provided by the cdma2000 1xEV (IS-856) standard are based on the high data rate (HDR) system. A published system model based on an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is introduced and used to characterize the 1xEV radio link. Four signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimators, built on the system model, are outlined and implemented in Matlab. The SNR estimators are applied to SNR estimation for mobiles in a 1xEV sector; they use the information to make data requests. The overall sector throughputs are used for a comprehensive assessment of the four estimators.
