A procedure has been developed to automatically orientate, register and fit single photon emission computer tomographic images of the brain. The reconstructed transaxial slices are centred and aligned using a guided, iterative correlation technique, correcting for translation and `yaw'. Then the resulting sagittal views are `pitch' corrected using a regression method. The coronal slices produced subsequently are `roll' corrected, again using the guided, iterative correlation method. Finally, the resulting transaxial slices are delineated using an active shape model and then stretched onto a pseudo standard model.
